I've had Monty for nearly 3 years now. When I got him he was stabled alot of the time and box-walking, weaved, cribbed and wind-sucked!!

He is now out 24/7 and is a much more chilled out chappie. I had a call 3 weeks ago from someone at the field saying he was weaving by the gate. I got another call last week from someone else concerned about the same thing. Zoom is up at the farmyard at the moment so I think maybe he misses her. However, this seems to have started 2 weeks before Zoom was away. Zoom also has always gone away for a couple of weeks here and there for horseball competitions.

I fed him last night, put him away and then fed my friend's horse. This is something I do regularly. Monty stood by the fence and started weaving like crazy!!

I haven't seen him do it for years!

I am baffled!! He seems well in himself, he's been a dream to ride recently, feed is the same, routine is the same....................why is he doing it?

There are some teenagers down the feed who like to feed titbits so maybe they have been feeding him but to be honest, I give him carrots and stuff and my mum spoils him rotten and he hasn't behaved like this before.

Any ideas??

That's a point. They may well have been feeding their horses when he was weaving before. We have a big field and then a small paddock with sheds/tie-ups that we bring the horses into to feed them.

I always feed him first, put him away, then get the other horses out and feed them since he is a bit naughty with his legs when feeding.

Do you think he is begging? He is fed two big feeds a day and has hay out in the field which lasts until I come in the evening.

We've not had any changes to the herd for a while. They are actually all getting on very well at the moment.........no troublemakers!

Sounds like he's expressing himself in the best way he knows - he's having a little moan. Not sure it's really anything to worry about tbh.

Hi there

My weaver used to weave and box walk constantly in the stable when i bought him. I put him on lots of turn out, ad lib hay and switched his feeds from cereal based mix to conditioning fibre feeds. But since about October started to stand at the field gate and weave because he wanted to come in. he is turned out with Domino, all the time. Perhaps your lad wants to come in out of the bad weather (Im not suggesting that you indulge this whim if you dont want to!).

Hmmmm..........he hasn't seen the inside of a stable for 3 years. Maybe he does want to come in, I suppose it has been very wet.

But when I have been arriving in the rain this week he is always out grazing in the monsoon rather than sheltering in the trees. I guess I should just leave him to it. I worry more about Monty than any other horse I have ever cared for. He's a very sensitive fella and, being nearly 30 years old I always panic about anything with him.
