This morning i was tacking my 4yr old up as normal. I put her bridle on, tied her up with headcollar over bridle and went back in the tackroom to fetch her saddle. Just as i went in i heard a commotion so went back out just as she got loose. Somehow she had managed to get her snaffle bit stuck on the latch to the stable and had obviously panicked. Luckily the leather cheek pieces had snapped within a few seconds and she was ok. God knows how she managed to get stuck as i am a bit paranoid about checking for things like that as i had a horse once get his headcollar stuck on the ramp catch on the Ifor Williams trailer and collapse. Luckily someone cut his headcollar and he was ok - just had a small cut on his face. I now always shove something over the handles so they cant get stuck.

It was a good reminder how good leather is in that respect as it will snap. I have never had a webbing bridle but surely that wouldnt have snapped as quick? Loads of us use webbing headcollars including me but i think i'm going to look for a leather one.

By the way, i was worried that it would have scared her about the bit as she is only four, but rigged up another bridle and luckily she was fine.

Yes your're right - when my mare was younger she did a similar thing and luckily she was wearing a leather headcollar. Was a bit miffed that she'd ruined the lovely posh headcollar but still better than a ruined pony!

I was riding my pony one day in a bubble gag with three rings. We went through a bridleway gate. It was a new one with a long handle that you could open the gate with whilst still on your mount. I opened the gate went through, then put my legs on my ponys side to move him towards the closing gate. Imagine my horror when I moved close to the gate and my ponys bubble gag ring was over the long handle on the gate. I quietly put my hand on the gate handle and pushed upwards lifting the bubble gag ring up over and off the handle. The pony was none the wiser and I was so relieved we escaped a terrible accident waiting to happen. I am so carefull now with things like that....

Definately leather every time as a matter of safety - I have seen quite a few leather bridles snap when they have needed to and stopped potentially dangerous situations.

Also they look ten times better than the horrible webbing things!

I use leather headcollars - you can get them very cheap now for turnout and travelling.

Have never used anything other than leather for bridles - I personally just don't like webbing.
