It is quite common to apply them to relieve excess strain on the tendons to allow them the best conditions to heal. I wouldn't expect them to wear any quicker than other shoes. Is the horse doing an significant amount of roadwork?
Are they a light alloy type maybe? As your horse improves then an early breakover shoe (such as Natural Balance) with a graduated pad might be an option to discuss with your farrier to see you through a 4-6 week shoeing cycle.
I would suggest checking to make sure that your horse is landing heel and not toe first, as toe first would indicate that the foot is out of balance and needs your farriers attention.
thanks for advice. vet coming tomorrow for review as mare still reluctant to flex fetlock. shoes appear to be normal weight but farrier says they're not really designed for riding, just for remedial purposes
Hi I had aluminium shoes with a wedge built in fitted to my mare who had a tendon injury for about 6 months after her box rest period, the only problem with the aluminium ones they cant put stud holes in so once she was back competing I had to choose between normal shoes or normal shoes with a separate wedge pad, these shoes definately helped her though and werent much more expensive than normal shoes
thanks, competing seems like a far off dream ATM but good to hear that shoes helped with recovery. planning to switch to normal shoes with wedge pads in a couple of months to reduce wedge height gradually.
