We have a 3 acre field.

We had it mowed and baled in May and have since been giving the horses just a portion of the field at a time and moving electric fence to give them just a bit more grass.

The field is generally good but does have some docks, some nettles and some thistles.

I'm thinking of spraying to improve the grass.

Any recommendations on a good spray to use?

Can we use it with the horses close to? I'm thinking I could spray the parts where they have already been, which is now regrowing ready for when they finish going across the field. It'll be a couple of months minimum before they are back on the first acre. But they are currently on the middle acre, is that ok to be that close? They wouldn't be able to get to any of the weeds I would be spraying.

Then when they are on the final acre, I would try and do the middle acre. Once they have eaten finished, they would then go back to the first acre which would have been sprayed months before. I would then spray the final acre.

Does that sound the correct way to do it?

Thanks

Have a look at the Agrigem website, they would advise on the best weed killer to use, it partly depends on how you are spaying (knapsack, boom etc). There are several which will be fine for horses after 2 months, many much less than that. If you spray on a calm day away from the direction of the horses current grazing you will be fine. Don't forget the weeds must be actively growing for the spray to work so you probably only have another 6 weeks or so
