Morning peeps :D bit chilly here this morning!!

Just a quick question... Does/has anyone ever used the spray on weedkiller you can buy in the supermarket for ragwort in your fields? It says safe for use with pets but I'm not sure...don't want to waste my money on getting it if it's not safe!!

Fox's bisquits on offer for anyone who can help and costa hot choc with cream and marshmallows!!!! :D xx

Yes, & it worked well, but remember that it will kill everything it touches, so do it on a still day.

Also, while it will be safe to turnout when the weedkiller's dry, the dying ragwort will become palatable so you still can't turn horses out on it until it's completely dead & removed.

For the best results you need these chemicals

Here is a link to a spreadsheet of weeds and the chemicals that will kill them - they trade names may be unique to New Zealand but the chemical components are probably available world wide. (Title says pesticides but is in fact about herbicides.

Remember that many weeds that are untouched when living become more palatable when dying and are more likely to be eaten.

If you are spot spraying 'Barrier H' is fantastic stuff - make sure you spray before the plants start flowering.

If you want to leave your horses out in the field - spray and then put something over the plant - you can buy expensive yellow caps, but a chopped off bottle that you can stomp into the ground works too

Personally I prefer to remove the whole plant so I know there is no possibility of horses eating the dried palatable ragwort

Best solution is to dig out the plant with a trowel not a rag fork, spray the hole, cover hole with a stone. I cleared two acres by this method. A pity my ignorant neighbour is still growing it on her 10 acres as a root crop.

Barrier H is supposed to kill but v expensive, assume you still must remove dead plant

I still fork it. If I had loads I would pull it first year and usually I just walk around now as I go dog walking with a carrier bag on a wet day and dig it bit at a time(so its not back breaking),
Over a period of time it has become much less.

Last year I filled 4 wheelbarrows up from a farm field and the local pub shoved it on their bonfire!
