is there any type of weed killer i can use on my paddock which is safe for the horses? i can rest it for a while after i do it. i am strimming down nettles but as soon as i get them done they are coming back up, and they are taking over the place.

If you are able to just treat the nettles with a hand sprayer or weed wipe you could use Roundup or a generic glyphosate as there is no withhold time and it is safe to eat treated plants.

As horseriderdeb said, the horses here love strimmed nettles once they wilt. If you keep strimming them regularly they will eventually die off, they aren't as tough as say, docks. If you go down the weedkiller route I'd recommend Grazon 90 too.

If you can drive over them! I find that helps! Squashes them, breaks the stems, and they seem to struggle back up after that and start dying off, and then your horses will eat them!

It helps if they're at least 3ft tall by then though ;-)

Grazon is nothing like as effective as POLO which will also kill buttercup and ragwort- oh and its a 3rd of the price- only need to rest 14 days too :)

Question, I have just gained my own land, a farmer up the road is mowing the top half for silage for his cows this year (has done previously and this yr is last yr) Bottom half is a mess of weeds, brambles etc. Have been advise to use Pastor or Grazon 90 (mpost likely will use grazon 90 and will get the brambles aswell), but was told by someone else that you have to have a licence/certificate of competance to buy/use it?

Is this the case? if so Ill have to pay someone to do it which will become expensive, would rather do it myself as have the equipment!

Cheers

yes you have been told right. we were told we werent allowed to buy it but had to get a contractor with the right licence to come and do it. However worked a treat as he knew exactly what amount etc to out on our land to get rid of the weeds

I don't think you need a licence for Grazon. I buy it from my local agricultural merchant & only have to sign name & address for it (I suppose someone might at some time check that I do own land). However I also get a local licenced contractor to assess & spray my field every other year & find that keeps most weeds under control.
