My jack russell is 8 years old. She has always been really good and has always had an iron bladder, never would she dream of weeing in the house. BUT about 3 wks ago around the time of coming into season she started to wee at night in the kitchen. She has just gone out of season and is doing it on and off. This has never happened before when she is in season. She knows she is wrong but haven't told her off as think there must be a reason for it

Any ideas welcome

It could be something as simple as a UTI or something more serious such as pyometra seeing as it came on soon after her season. You should think about getting her spayed whatever the issue is.

I would also say possible Pyo if she hasnt had a litter. Could also be cystitis. My old bitch suffered from this prior to every season and had accidents at night from time to time when coming into season, despite being house trained, and we nearly missed Pyo as a result of it. Best to get it checked asap. If it is cystitis it can be treated easily. If it is pyo she will need to be emergency speyed. If it was my bitch i would get her down to the vets tomorrow, due to her age, just to be sure. I am not saying it is pyo because I am not a vet, and I may be talking rubbish, but I would want to rule it out.

Fingers crossed it is something simple.:)

Would get it checked out for the reasons given...our old bitch, large breed, was spayed at ten years old and went on to live another four before being PTS for something entirely unrelated so don't panic over her age.

I thought they were really poorly if they had pyo and i have been told they don't get this while they are in season. I have also been told that when dogs are in season they go slightly diabetic so this may be the cause (a vet told me this). She isn't doing it so much now so maybe what ever it is has gone away. But if it comes back i will defo get her down to the vet, can't bare the thought of my little princess being poorly

Thanks for all scaring me!! She has definately not got pyo and may poss have an infection but nothing life threatening. Thanks for your opinions and help, but maybe won't post re my dog again as you really worried me!! She won't be getting spayed, not an option

Im sure no one wanted to worry you un neccesarily, but you did ask for advice, older bitches are highly prone to pyo the more seasons they have and when they do you either see symptoms or you dont and they can literally be bright as a button right to the point they are operated on, we had a staff in work the other night, happy as larry and at the same time she was pass, blood, puss and discharge at an alarming rate, she was not drinking alot either (which is usally the first sign)
Have they tested her urine, you say poss infection? this woud be simple enough to test for.
I would not rule out incontinence given her age, and obs if she remains entire keep a close eye out for pyo, it can be a silent killer, as well as an alarming one.

I also thought by the time they were really sick with pyo it was probably too late to save the dog. I have only experienced it once and the bitch was a bit off colour but not really ill. She was 6 years old. That is why I said it wouldnt harm to get it checked. Just not worth the risk with an older bitch.:)

Glad it is just an infection.

I would really recommend you get her spayed to be honest. She is past breeding age and it will eridicate the risks of her suffering a whole range of nasties that non- spayed older bitches can suffer from. My mam has bred dogs for years and gets then spayed as soon as they are too old for breeding, it really is a much better option. I have a 14 year old ex stud dog who i didnt get castrated once he had finished his stud career. Now he suffers from perianal pyoderma (big lumps on his bottom that are very uncomfortable and can turn cancerous) They are a direct result of not having him castrated and now of course he is too old for castration, his little heart wouldnt take it!

Im not trying to scare you, just trying to say that i could bloody kick myself for not getting him done. If you get her spayed now it could save a lot of worry later on.

Hi emlybob, as everyone else has covered medical, I thought I'd offer a different angle, although not necessarily the correct one !

Perhaps the first time she did it, she really was desperate, then after this time she is just weeing because she can smell she has already been there before.

My dogs are crated at night - they will not wee in thier crate and hold on until the morning, however if they are not crated at night then they will find somewhere to wee and usually its the same spots (despite using all sorts of urine cleaner).

Just a thought, and hope you get her sorted soon x
