Weeing on the bed!

My three year old border terrier will sometimes jump on a couple of our beds and mark his territory on the pillows, he will also sometimes do it on the skirting board too or odd items of clothing on the floor. It isn't everyday and its not because he needs a wee as someone is virtually always in the house with him. Any suggestions as to how to get him to stop. We don't really tell him off as we only find it later.

This is a difficult one.

First of clean everything again as no matter how hard you try to clean the smell might still be there for the dog.

Then restrict his access to his favourite peeing places, close doors, use baby gates etc., so that he is contained in a smaller part of the house.

Take him to the garden for toilet every one hour (this is a nightmare to do, but if you can work round it, it does help). When he does go to the toilet outside, treat and praise him.

If all else fails and he just 'sneaks off' to pee, this will work but it is difficult to keep up: tie a long lead round your waist and keep him on it in the house. This way you can keep an eye on him all the time and break the cycle.

Good luck!

Thanks for your advice. He does understand weeing outside, and he pretty much has constant access to the garden. I try to keep the bedroom doors shut but it is really hard with the children going in and out of the rooms. I will try tying him to something round my waist, but it's difficult because he will sometimes go several days without doing it.

Is he doing it to spite you? I had a shih tzu who would wee on the bed right in the middle when I went out for the evening. Only sometimes, not every time, I guess when she felt I'd stayed out too late. She stopped after she was REALLY told off and made to sleep in the kitchen instead of having the run of the house. My mother also used to have a shih tzu who would do the same thing, always on my brother's bed for some reason...

Shame it's not the childrens beds, they'd soon learn to keep the doors shut then!

This is an interesting post - last year, my OH's border terrier (aged 13, who I only JUST manage to tolerate in my bedroom anyway - against my will) jumped up onto my bed when I was in the bathroom and weed on the bed

I was furious and smacked his bum very hard, and he hasnt done it since....but it is just interesting that OP has a border who has done the same!

I've never heard of any other breed to do this!

It sounds like he's being dominant and scent marking, my JR used to do this (though never on the bed) in the house. Get him prepared to say "bye bye" to the furry plums - stopped my JR from going in the house

Agree with Echodomino...this can be a sign of dominance, and also displayed my more anxious or submissive dogs, I would have the boy chopped and deny him access to the areas he is scenting...if you are in the house, don't allow him out of the room you are in at any one time, you cannot reprimand what u don't see....when out, baby gate the kitchen.
