My week old colt is nibbling grass and seeming to be chewing it, is this normal? Is it going to cause him to block up as his digestive system isn't ready? I haven't seen him pass any dung recently although he urinates quite frequently.

Any advice greatly appreciated

Mine was tugging at the grass at 3 days old!! He also seemed to be chewing on the odd strand, but in whole they are mimicking (sp?!) mums behaviour and is completely normal, they don't tend to swallow much of it despite looking like they are!!

It is absolutely normal beahviour. They start copying mum almost immediately and try to eat what she eats and soon enough he will be eating it properly.

I would'nt worry, I've just had one that was eating his straw bed at 6 days old, a complete piglet, but had to be in till he finished his antibiotics, now he's out, eating grass and dunking whole head in water trough!!!
He's into everything.......

They have premolars in place at birth anyway, so he'll manage to chew it fine
