OP do please take care with companion ponies. At first glance a companion pony or 2 seems a cheap option to keep the "main" horse happy. But the harsh reality is that 2 companion ponies would STILL NEED feet trimming, worming, dentist, jabs, veterinary care and some sort of plan to cover what on earth you'd do for cash if 1 of them say developed laminitis or broke a leg or had some other chronic condition. If an elderly horse was the companion, you'd probably need at least 2 of every rug because there'd be nowhere and no way for them to dry.
