Well we are well and truly in a slump here 🤣 between rubbish weather and lots of yard related DIY, I have done shamefully little 🫣

Anyone doing anything nice this week?!

I've basically written the week off already 😂 THE RAIN 😭😭😭

I meant to take my saddle home to give it a good clean as it got drenched last week, so I would at least be doing something productive. Alas I have a head like a sieve and was halfway home before I remembered I didn't put it in the car.

Sadie having her teeth done on Wednesday so if she has a very easy week it's no biggie

Ah see I’m in my “holy #%! it’s only 8 weeks until spring” phase 🤣

After a few weeks of bad weather and life getting in the way I’m feeling pretty determined to crack on and get us both fit & ready.

Braved the rain and stopped making excuses and got a flatwork session in last night at 7pm after a day out with OH. First 20 mins in Equicore bands then another 25 mins without, finished with some walk poles.

Today was a win win as I both got back from a work meeting early enough to ride in daylight AND caught a break in the rain, so we took the opportunity to hack out.

Tuesday - OH is out at the football in the evening which means I can ride after work at an antisocially late hour 😉 so schooling session.

Wednesday- water treadmill

Thursday - day off

Friday - I’m waiting to hear if trainer can fit me in for a lesson, if not will likely flatwork/polework

Saturday - aiming for a long-ish hack

Sunday - TBC, we’re viewing wedding venues so will see what time I get back.

me and lily are off to our first outing of the year tomorrow, local arena hire with a workers course set up and a couple of solid jumps in. also in a proper slump, but i’m now the proud owner of a (2nd hand) hippo shower, so i can at least wash away the endless mud with warm water🤣

no plans for the rest of the week, literally just trying to make it through!! tomorrow is also divas last day of ulcer treatment, and frankly i’m debating giving her another month on it purely to put off getting back on the lunatic!😂

Awesome lesson last night with Freddy Steele. I’m lucky he’s local, but he’s usually so busy I struggle to get booked, so it felt like a real win. Despite the dark, wet, windy weather, he helped me keep Amber focused and got me riding with my inside leg further forward, which relaxed her rib cage and helped her soften. Total light‑bulb moment.
He also had me bring my outside leg forward at times, which really freed up her shoulder and front end. We carried that into canter, and although the leg work and calf pulses took some coordination, she gave me some powerful canter. From there we could turn up the centre line and leg yield in canter to the track. Next step will be adding the change once we’re in counter canter.
Amber genuinely seemed to enjoy the session; the focused, busy work followed by proper “do nothing” breaks. When resting at the spooky end, Freddy pointed out that I need to wait not just for her to blink, but for her to shuffle and rebalance before she’s truly relaxed. It’s so good having a trainer who sees the small things that bother her and can help us work through them while still pushing us on.
The inside‑leg pulse is a great tool when she checks out; brings her back without annoying her. Freddy described it as a “wall of fog” going up between us, which is spot on, and it’s something I can use in the show pen too. He’s also challenged me to stop helping her quite so much; she’s well‑schooled and perfectly capable but very happy to let me do the work, which Sean has said as well.
Hopefully I can get monthly lessons with Freddy and finally get the canter properly sorted.
It’s absolutely chucking it down with strong winds today, so she’s getting a day off.

Tried to do some quiet walk work in the semi-flooded arena but instead I got an earful from the YO as she was leaving some fairly deep tracks from her sliding stops 🙃 Another mare who is usually the most docile, perfect angel of a horse almost bulldozed her mum 15 mins previous so we decided the arena was just f-ing haunted yesterday.

Feeling glad I always get her sedated for teeth anyway, if she's going to be in that kind of mood again today!

Whilst I generally don't believe in the January blues, or blue Monday or whatever the media call it, I am having a bit of a slump at the moment and just general low energy and of course the almost persistent wet weather isn't helping matters. That said I've entered a couple of early PR's and even a novice 22km EGB ride so need to keep going and get Standie boy fit enough to enjoy them and not struggle round as that's just not fair on either of us.
We did manage a respectable and hilly 18 miles at the weekend; 11 Saturday and 7 Sunday and the plan for the week is:

Monday - day off as my long day at school, minimal jobs only
Yesterday - same and even lazier as teen daughter did the ponies for me!
Today - half day here, so will aim to be on for 2pm and do 2 hours hilly hacking, predominantly still at walk but working on some more trot work to get our average speed up a little bit nearer 7kph
Tomorrow - half day, so another 2 hour hack solo
Friday - day off
Saturday - hiring a trailer, so working on relaxed loading and a short box out somewhere for a hack with my daughter riding and me walking (as I'm also training for an 18 mile trail run/hike in March!)
Sunday - weather depending hacking out to a local school to do some walk-trot transitions, using some poles to help us.

loving reading everyone else plans x

Only managed an hours hack yesterday as the weather was awful, the rain was coming down sideways and it just was NOT enjoyable at all. so we turned round after 30 mins and rode back. Standie boy was on a mission though probs cause he was enjoying the weather as much as me and just wanted to get it done! So he marched along at an incredible walk, his "trots" were pacey, but we had 2 short canters where the ground allowed, making our average pace 7.5 kph.
Talking myself into going out again this afternoon, but probs only an hour as its raining again :(

Lesson cancelled! And going out for OH's birthday tomorrow so that is the week OFFICIALLY a write-off 😂

The weather is absolutely stinking isn’t it!

Had farrier last night, he felt that Big Unit was a bit uncomfortable on right hind - fetlock is slightly swollen too 🤦🏻‍♀️ he seems happy enough on it but he has history so will tread carefully and probably get it scanned / xrayed.
Consoling myself that at least it is the same side as the ddft injury 🥲 I’d be more in a panic if it was the left haha

Everyone is SO GRUMPY. Well, the horses are all lit for some reason but all the humans are universally miserable.

What have you done to yourself Big Man 😭

I’m hoping he’s just strained it slightly in the field and it just needs a bit of TLC. I’m sort of reassuring myself that at least we are way better equipped now to deal with rehab/rest etc if needed, but hopefully that’s not going to be necessary, forewarned is forearmed and all that 🤦🏻‍♀️

Plan for the worst, hope for the best! 🙃 a no-big-deal slip in the mud is the most likely thing, but will keep fingers crossed for him anyway

This week has been a total write off! I have a stinking cold and it is in my sinuses so I'm not sleeping, have a throbbing headache and generally feel like slumping on the sofa. My fields took about 30mm of rain and the ground water is so high it is now sitting there in big muddy puddles and the bridleways are no better.

I managed to walk out the Appy this morning (she has PSSM so needs to do 'something' in her retirement) and that exhausted me. The bottom of the bridleway had deep water over it and she had great fun splashing whilst I stood at the far end of the leadrope not really feeling the love for a waterfall of cold, muddy water down my wellies!!

Not the most productive week despite feeling quite motivated at the start of the week. After Monday's hack, Tuesday was an 8pm finish at work and howling winds & rain so didn't bother riding. Water Treadmill Wednesday evening, last night was another late finish and I do generally give Thursday's off after treadmill so took the excuse! Today will school after work. Hack over weekend.

January - meh
