I don’t even know how to describe this afternoon. Went rough shooting with my young springer who was amazing. Then Bear ripped my friend/his second mums hands to shreds coming in from field spooking at a horse galloping up his arse (fair I guess).

Then Bog was just not right for his lesson he felt stiff and choppy which is usual Bog until he’s worked in but not in recent times since he’s become stronger and been schooled more. I have a feeling I’ve over done the raised pole work and made him sore. Feel really bad.

So had lesson on Bear who has just reverted back to a wooden, no mouth, not off the leg, no bend, mouth like a piece of stone. He’s been like this since he came back from his break and it’s annoying as he had improved so much and ended on a great note and now we are back to square one. It was depressing and frustrating but luckily I have a great instructor (Cara) who worked us through it. She did shout at me numerous times “STOP HUNTING HIM AND RIDE LIKE A DRESSAGE RIDER” . Whoops.

Horses eh. Tomorrow is another day..

Patience with Bear and physio/a walk and hacking week for Boggle which will hopefully bring him right. I’ve got complacent as he’s improved so so much every week so a set back where he feels really not ok is a shame.

MP yay thats a good view there ?
SP, try rise for two sit for two as well, its a good one for balance, core and leg stability.
Michen, that sounds like a bit of a rubbish day all round. On a slight positive Bear has been like this before and got out of the habit reminding is easier than changing it the first time so I'm sure he'll sort himself out soon.
We did not hack, thick snow this morning so cracked on rearranging the stable block and put the boys in the turnout patch for a couple of hours

Ahh I know you are right. He is far more physically capable than Boggle and has such a natural ability but Boggle was just never this “raw”. I feel I’ve ruined Bears mouth through hunting him but it was the best thing for him mentally at the time.

I’m probably expecting too much.

It will come back, half a season won't ruin him. Ultimately if he wants to stay you clearly love your hunting so he needs to be able to do that far more than be a nice elementary horse. I find if Charlie has done a lot of western with his owner he's horrid to school for a few rides, but it soon comes back and he's 12 this year and far more established as a western hack than a competition horse

Been a busy time horse wise lately.
The rehabbing boy has gone from strength to strength - started last weekend when I threw him in at the deep end by riding through a prelim and had it videoed (technically for online dressage but haven't submitted it) only his second time cantering, and went straight into it after warming up in walk.
He had a lesson the other day (first one since coming back into ridden work), just 30min and kept it easy but great to have some eyes on ground. General points were to slow him down, not ask for so much angle on the lateral work. But instructor thought he looked good, and we did some work with changing the bend whilst in shoulder-in which he was much better at then before he broke. So happy to have him back doing something. Still taking it one day at a time, and know it may not last, but living in the moment.
I am restricting him to being ridden 3 times a week, so carrying on with in hand stuff too. He's also been clipped, and have been fitting him for hoof boots.
Am also super pleased with coblet, she is totally different but makes me laugh - much needed right now. Sharer 1 rode her on Thursday and went for her first solo hack. This sharer has had a huge confidence knock from a previous horse and has been too scared to hack (she's done it once in company since she started sharing). So was super pleased to hear they went for a canter round the big field, and coblet was a super star.
Lovely hack out today in the sunshine with an ex-racehorse (previous group 1 winner), and we went for a blast - well he blasted. Coblet casually followed on behind ?
Not expecting to do much tomorrow as forecast snow.

Happy to oblige with sunny pictures!
Had a mixed weekend, wonderful ride on Friday with Henry, he’s feeling great at the moment and getting stronger all the time, he feels very hot at the moment which I kinda have to learn to embrace.

He jumped really well yesterday, found it quite easy through an exercise we had trouble with in our last lesson.

Then today hacked out, he was his usual keen self, had a trot and canter, felt great, power walked up a hill and then asked for trot again and he was off. Couldn’t find anything obvious but we walked home and I stuck him on the lunge to see what was happening and he looked awesome, nothing to be seen so no idea what he did, hopefully he just tweaked something or stepped on a rock, and he’s ok for our clinic on Tuesday ?

Coolie had a good ride today too, but he has a nice easy life hacking!

My two are similar @Michen - the older horse (Arab x Appaloosa - fast, sporty sort of horse) has never really felt 'raw' but weak and needed 'proper' consistent work to make the best of his athleticism. The young horse is 'easier' in lots of ways but the first couple of rides after her break were not quite what I hoped. She has done 2 weeks of hacking only work now and is feeling loads better!! Yesterday she was offering a lovely contact too. They are all different and patience, time, the right work at that time is the answer! Hunting helped Bear to develop forward, courage and how to use himself and now he might need a bit more 'formal' learning tis all. He will feel massively different in a few weeks (or possibly days). Sounds like Boggle has made great progress so the odd day where all is not what you hoped for is entirely frustrating but not unusual I don't think. Keep going!! :)

Another livery's horse was footsore after a trim too. She spoke to the vet who happened to be there the following day and he said he liked the way the feet had been trimmed, and some horses are sore for a day or two?? The farrier comes very highly recommended but it does not seem right to me either. Ill talk to him. x

That’s not right at all. The trim is way too aggressive. Little and often is the key.

More snow so did more bouncing through it yesterday.

Glad I finally got some footage of Topaz's bouncing as I know what to improve now, I'm still too guilty of not asking for 'enough' and settling for 'some' though I could really do with someone on the ground with a wooshy stick :p. Be glad when everything thaws though as we're not doing much with everything being so hard, though at least naked feet mean we don't end up with stilettos!

Saturday - hacking in brilliant sunshine, fighting the hoards of people who all emerged and congregated to the country park.
Sunday - frozen arena, rain, freezing cold, no one about so another hack to the country park, funnily enough didn't see another soul. Managed two tiny trots where the ground allowed. Hopefully the arena will have thawed out later so we can get out of first gear. Getting mightily fed up with the wet now, it looks like we've got rain here every day for the next 10 days apart from today (East London). I am seriously wondering if it is ever, ever going to dry out. What with this and lockdown, I am feeling pretty 'meh' today

TSC - I think we can all relate to that feeling at the moment. It feels relentless with the weather + lockdown. Fingers crossed for better weather soon, at least the days are slowly getting longer...

I've been managing to keep my spirits up but have certainly hit a bit of a bump. I definitely did notice the amount of extra daylight, especially on Saturday when it was bright to just past 5pm, so that is something to feel a bit more cheerful about for sure

We had a lot of snow on Saturday eve so I didn't see Rose on Sunday, S did a very stretchy workout with her in the indoor school and said she was very chilled. I went over today, slippy slidey roads though but just glorious blue skies again. Rose was hilarious, almost had smoke coming out of her nostrils and so strong! I was really pleased that I wasn't riding! Is she coming into season already???? She loves her FCs a little bit too much today, lots of squealing, a couple of explosions and excited galloping around. S takes it all in her stride whilst I shriek with laughter and video my feet so there is nothing to show you. edit Just remembered I took a pic of her at the end of the session!e3drSmXrnxCfTkMDiK4s0MR-411Ii_dnvSeNw2F3DckwJXtcIuDImqR3MbMaggnZdOvNVx3pYRRuN1L3ErMLGKxoOrCijl...jpg

We had the best time at the clinic yesterday. Henry is still NQR, physio booked in for him and in the mean time lots of heat packing and he will spend some time working on the lunge (correctly, using his back to help stretch the muscles out where he is sore), so Coolie got to come out for a play.

I wrote a huge long post, but I will start another thread. I love my horse so much, he is such a good and clever boy!

Phew I think you were right, Bear was back to "normal" today (hasn't schooled since the awful lesson!). No idea what that was all about then!

Boggle had physio and had a very sore neck on one side so am hoping that was it...

It's Wednesday so I reckon it is still last weekend.....

Recorded an E-Rider test today. I am really nervous in case it's a shite score, because I feel like he went well and I just want some external validaiton that we are on the right track! Fingers crossed.
I'm sure you will be great! And if not don't worry I always get the lowest score of everyone as the judges often hate my batty Spanish so you won't be as bad as that ??

Yeah, northcote indoor is very, very scary apparently. Completed a long arena test in approximately the bottom two thirds of the arena - couldn't get near the A end
