Weeping spots on head...

Poor ponies!!
I would be keeping them in, just so that you cn try and control their surroundings a bit. Have you tried Aloe Vera on Grumpy and Melly to help with the sores/itching? Not a lot of help Im afraid, but worth a try?
Is Grumpy back to drinking now? I think you can get the Quencher stuff from most tack places now...give your local one a call and see if they have it? x

All my boy's hair fell out once and we narrowed it down to silage additive that had leaked onto straw bedding (I moved yards BTW). Probably not related to yours but if they had contaminated hay from a net and rubbed on it........

One thing that got baldy boy to drink was giving him the water from the hay soaking bin. He absolutely loved it and I had to ration him in the end.

ETS: Lavender wash is great for soothing irritated skin

nutkin, no the forage is our own and has been made early June.

Rosehip, just been to my local feed merchant, they can get it for me for tomorrow, which is better than not at all. They all are covered now in NAF D-itch and it seems to be soothing.
Grumps had a small drink of water with sugar beet and a sloppy meal of soaked sugar beet and fibre cubes (I've put some salt in it as well).
They're all in and not terribly impressed about it, heyho.

ETS: If anybody wants to volunteer to wash/bathe/smother Grumpy in anything, you are more than welcome:D

Do they graze with any other animals? I only ask as sheep can spread Orf which shows up on horses as blisters on their faces. It can be treated with spray. Maybe completely off the mark if you have no sheep but thought i'd mention it just in case.

My old mare used to get a weepy patch, both sides of her neck around the size of a large hand. it would come over night, be scabby, itchy and horrid. It always used to happen just as the summer coat started to thicken for winter around this time. It would be gone in a few days.

Odd that a few of yours has it.

How did you get on with the water?

I do have sheep, but definitely it is not orf:) also, the sheep have never been on this pasture.
Rache, he had a drink, be it small, but he had one, so that's good news. Seems fairly perky as well.

Sounds like a staphylococcus infection to me... and the steroids made it worse. In humans, it's called scolded skin syndrome and is treated with IV antibiotics... and I assume it would be similar in horses

Well, I would say that it looks better after the steroids... the swelling is gone and although peeling off, the skin underneath seems healthy enough?
Unfortunately, at least in Grumpy's case, IV antibiotics (or IV anything for that matter) is not an option.:o
