one of my boys has a bit of a weepy eye. no gunge and its clear stuff thats coming out and theres not much of it but obviously want to sort it before it gets worse. Just wondering whats the best way to deal with it? thanks in advance

I would clean it with warm water for a few days and if it's still weeping you could get the vet to come and look and they prescibe you some eye drops? As long as it's not swollen it doesn't sound like much to worry about. Hope he is ok

Any worry with eyes, I would PM Box of Frogs, she is the forum expert. She normally comes on the forum around 11pm'ish if you can hang around

Hi Sophie B - dunno about expert lol but I fought a 6 month battle to save my ned's eye (see sig) so I had to learn a lot very fast.

Eyes are fragile and very precious. Weeping is obviously the eye's response to some sort of "insult". This could be as simple as the wind and rain or as complicated as a foreign body stuck in/scratched the eye. If this is a new thing for your boy then I'd check the eye closer if he will let you and try to see if the membrane round it is inflamed or if you can actually see anything stuck in there or if the cornea looks milky. Is he rubbing at it? Is he screwing the eye up in strong daylight or standing at the back of his stable? If you are in any doubt whatsoever, I'd get the vet out fast. Hopefully it is just one of those transitory things and he will be fine again in a day or so.

If you try to treat it yourself (cold tea, Golden Eye Ointment, etc) do be aware that these things are GENERALLY ok to soothe a tired eye but will not clear up an infection or remove a foreign body! Also, if you put anything in the eye yourself or are prescribed ointment or drops from the vet, take GREAT care in how you put them in the eye. Sunny finally lost his battle after the yard staff stabbed him in the eye with the sharp pointy end of the plastic tube of the very eye cream that was supposed to be helping him. It tore the cornea and all the slow, slow healing that had taken place was undone in a split second. That was the beginning of the end. Apply creams by putting it onto the clean end of your finger then squishing that into the ned's eye. If ned jerks at the wrong moment, you are much less likely to injure him.

Fingers crossed he is ok - please let us know xxx

thank you for your replies! it seems to be clearing up, isnt anywhere as weepy. he is fine in himself and the eye looks perfectly normal, so fingers crossed in a few days it'l be sorted. Il let u know, thanks again

So pleased Sophie. It's usually the case that it's something simple and nasty things developing are rare, but I'm paranoid about eyes (and ragwort lol)! Give him a hug for me xxx

Sophie: I just thought I'd say listen to Box_of_Frogs's excellent advice! I was in the same predicament as yourself and she urged me to get the vet: I did and my Ned had an ulcer....could have got very nasty but thankfully we got it all sorted in good time.

So thanks Box_of_Frogs!

Glad to have been of some help Bugly. I always say that if the lessons from what Sunny went through help just one other horse, then he won't have lost his eye in vain. Please everyone, spread the word about how easy it is to terribly damage an already injured eye by stabbing it with the end of the ointment tube! I wish I knew how to start a campaign fpr the manufacturers to come up with a better, safer application method! Anyone got any ideas? Might do an open letter to H&H, see what response. x

I have been pondering the serious design fault myself whilst juggling tubes/horses heads and my fingers (trying to keep it all clean) and aiming for the eye! A soaked wipe, like a baby wipe with a gel of the antiseptic on might work, you could just wipe it over the eye and push it into the bottom corner....or even if they made the antiseptic in a dispenser as a thick gel, you could then apply to the corner of the eye with your finger and you can make gels that break down into liquid...could it them dissolve over the eye? Maybe we should go on Dragon's Den!
