True it wasnt, forgot you werent around when it was stated a few months ago. My mistake.

I've just bought a beautiful made to measure Patey top hat. It fits like a glove. If anyone buys a m2m Patey (whatever style of hat) and it is not comfortable, just make an appointment to go back to see Paul and he will stretch it in the right place to ensure that it is perfect. Anyone spending that sort of money and not being happy probablyt deserves to have a headache!!!

I had a Christy before, but I have a lump on my forehead and the cardboard feel of the Christy made my lump expand dramatically whenever I wore the hat for more than an hour at a time. Hence I went down the M2M route.

Pateys do a range of "hunting caps". Deep crown, normal, square peak etc. You have whatever suits you best. They do several styles.

meant to add, some of the German hats are more up and down rather than slightly waisted. You need to check the shape first. Also, do you know the exact height that suits you best?

I love the look and shape of the Christies top hats, but as BBs said, they just don't fit me... Also would LOVE a Patey, but can't stretch to £400+ for a top hat.. So i thought i'd settle on a trip to London for a m2m from 'James Lock & co.' and in the mean time i'd keep an eye on ebay...
This Wegener is the first to turn up in my size

Have to say, i don't really like the look of it, but just thought i'd ask on here...

patey often have second hand hats (varous makes including their own) at slightly better prices. You are also more likely to get a real silk hat as these are generally the older hats that are on the market. Proper silk hats stopped being made in 1980 or so when the last silk making machine was destroyed.

They are made of something like rabbit fur which is turned into fur felt now (or something like that).

Some Top Hat history ...

"Whilst Top Hats have been fashionable for all sorts of social events and in show business, the wearing of Toppers in the street finally stopped when the Stock Jobbers ceased wearing them in the City in October 1986. It was about this time that the silk plush also disappeared from the scene as the owners of the last looms in Lyon, two brothers, fell out and the looms were destroyed.

So after about 1980 black silk Top Hat manufacturing ceased. It is highly unlikely that this silk manufacturing will be revived due to the vast cost of making new looms. The cost of the silk itself would be heady, and because the silk is cut on the bias, causing much wastage, it would take a metre and a half of this silk per Hat."

God - we should have an award for the person who knows the most absolutely totally useless information
