For those of you who contributed to my posts about feeding Jack correctly to slim him down, - whilst at the vets we got him weighed. He is 620k. Gulp.
Funny he looks slimmer and no big belly
- do you think some may muscle?
Just thought you may know what yours weigh, so I can compare.

What did the vet say about his weight when he weighed him?

He doesn't look obese to me, possibly slightly chubby but then he looks like he has a lot of bone. He's supposed to be chunky
 
I suspect he just has a very deep ribcage/gith. Can you feel ribs if you run your hand firmly down his sides?
 
He looks very much like our cob, who is 15.1hh and was 800Kg when we got him

I don't think he is very overweight as ours looks chunky too, but is not fat. Of course it's difficult to tell when seeing and not feeling. He is lovely though

I have no idea what my cob weighs (bad mummy that I am) but I'd guess he's about the same weight!

He's 15.1 and 'dressage fit', carries tons of muscle on his neck & shoulders and I am regularly told by others on the yard that he's fat.

However, they base their judgement only on the depth of his girth and his width. The fact you can see ribs and he has no fat pockets is obviously irrelevant!!

Does your vet think he's fat?

ETS: Ooops, bit of a rant there but it does make me cross when people assume cobs are fat because they're not 'horse' shaped.
 
My lightweight mare weighs in at around 525kg at the moment!

She is so difficult to keep the weight off as she could live on thin air.

Your chap is lovely and chunky, and carries the weight nicely, I think.

My cob is 14.3hh, and from the front is the shape of a space hopper! It's just his natural shape, his weight does fluctuate a lot though, up to 720kg last summer, about 580kg now. Ours are on fairly average grazing, very short grass, but they are all good doers.
 
Well they say muscle weighs more than fat, and he doesn't look fat to me, he's a heavy type so shouldn't be too shocked to believe he weighs that.

I have a 16.1 WB and she weighs approx 550. But she isn't chunky at all.

620kg????? Are you sure?????? Were you maybe still sitting on him when he was weighed???? I have a 15.2 Section D/cob veteran who I am totally paranoid about since he had a bout of gassy colic a couple of weeks ago after idiot me turned him out on lush spring grass. Weigh tape him almost hourly now with one of those yellow ones that can also (not very accurately) be used to tell the height of a horse. Instructions say to pull it snug until it just makes a dip in the horse's flesh. Well, according to that, my boy is about 480kg and I've been told by knowledgeable people that he's too chunky. I don't reckon your ned looks 620kg though he does have a lot more bone than my lad. I think your boy looks gorgeous! Did the vet's say he was overweight?

And yes, I can feel his ribs and you can feel the muscle line on his belly. The vet didn't comment just said that's what he weighs, and gave me a condition score form that had a highlighter mark by 4-5 (too fat).
He does have a big neck, but I put that down to work cos he was almost ewe necked when I got him.

He still has an apple bum though so I will try and slim that down a bit more.

box of frogs, I wouldnt trust a weight tape ever. A friend of mine weight taped her horse, then 2 days later it went into a vet hospital and was weighed on a bridge. horse was 100kg heavier on the bridge.
according to weight tapes my 14hh connemara weighs more then your D does as weight tapes have him at 540kg, but his ribs are easily felt and there is very little fat on him. infact when the vet came to give him his jabs it was remarked that he was starting to look a little poor. the high weight on the weight tape is probably because he is very deep in the girth. different weight tapes have him at different weights (i have 3 tapes mostly freebees from companies) and both me and my sister get different weights when we weigh him 10 mins apart. I personaly believe him to be somewhere around the 450kg mark but havent had him on a bridge to get an accurate weight.

as for the OP. i'd say yes he does look like a 620kg horsey, i'd probably try to get a little more off him if he were mine personaly just to see if i could get rid of the apple bum (some cobs just have apple bums though no matter how skinny you get them). However i would say a great deal of that weight would just be those legs! how much bone does he have??? and of course with those legs he is always going to be substantialy built.

My similar cob type of 15.1 was weighed at vets and was 650 kilos - Fit too - no rolls of fat.
A weight tape makes him 525!
So do not trust weigh tapes for dosing of wormers , lorry payload etc.
They can record wieght gain or loss, but not correct 'mass' of a cob.
 
my 15hh weighs about 480kg now, but was 550kg when I got him in August- he was overweight. he has 9'' of bone.

i dont think your lad looks overweight at all- looks about right.
 
He looks fine but I would not have him any heavier. He looks to be a gypsy cob type - they are meant to have apple bums - but of muscle rather than fat.

Our 16.3 clyde weighs in at 740 and there is not any excess fat on him whatsoever - if anything he is on the light side - some people don't realise how much bone there is on these draft types and how broad they are naturally.
 
My 14.3hh Welsh Cob weighed a massive 620kg when I first had him. My vet recommended that his ideal weight was around 520kg and he is currently 480kg which I'm happy with going into spring.

Yes, misleading wiegh tapes!
Tye can montor change but not calcuate mass.

Just hope finding true weight is not after discovering a huge amounn of resistance worms due to under dosing or when their lorry is pulled for a weighbridge check.!
