probably been asked a million times before but I am taking on a lovely little welsh A gelding-he is 5 yrs old and approx 11.2hh. He is purebred welsh. I am 27 but tiny so hoping I could bring him on myself for my kids etc. I am 4ft 11 and approx 8 1/2 stone, maybe a little less? Anyway-do you think he could carry me for schooling, hacking and later on little jumps??????

When I was your weight there is no way I'd have got on a Sec A, particularly a young one. I was too much (IMO, the owners where fine with it, in fact suggested it, I was riding a 14hh pony for them at the time) for a 13hh pony of similar build to a Welshie. Definitely one for an older (but still small) child.

It really depends on the build and bone of the pony. A decent section A will easily carry 8 1/2 stone. A little spindly one won't.

These ponies used to carry the welsh farmers across the hills.

Sometimes I wonder if we're not too precious with them.

I think your height and weight will be fine.

Your pony is lovely, he is like mine so'i'm biased. Mine is only 2 though so no-one will be on him yet.

And a lot of the ones you see in showing have been produced by small adults / larger children. A six or seven year old child could not possibly school a section A on to the satndards that some of them achieve

I wouldn't hesitate getting on that pony if I was your weight (sadly I am not and so wouldn't dream of it!!). He will be fine to carry you for light work. We have 3 and my daughter will ride all of them when they are old enough, she is about your weight, she is 5'6 so will perhaps not be as comfy up there as you will!

I think your weight will be fine, they are tough little things, i used to ride my 11.2 & i was about 9ish stone then, best fun ive had on a pony!! As someone has already said they were bred to take the farmers up the hills :)

OP, you're not at all fat. You're just an adult. And that, IMO, is a child's pony. What we used to do with ponies years ago is besides the point. Some used to spend most of their lives down mines. It doesn't mean it was good for them or that they were healthy to an old age!

Your local Pony Club may be able to put you in touch with an older child looking for a challenge... (assuming your own aren't ready for that kind of thing yet.)
