I *think* there has been an improvement but would like your thoughts?

Still have A LOT of topline to build up, but that should come with time.

I will summarize as it is VERY long! Got her in September in poor condition but she was a complete stress-head and bronced at any change or scare.

Fell out of an arena through blind panic broncing - down and 8ft drop onto hedge/road. Luckily walked away with superficial injuries.

After a couple of months of working on her trust, she was backed by a friend who used a method a lot of people on here did not agree to. (I have changed username from then as I want non-biased opinions).

When she came back she was hacking nicely but still no weight gain. I thought I was doing the best by feeding what was recommended by a certain feed company. However she did not put any weight on.

I had her front shoes taken off as she was losing them weekly. I posted photos about her hooves the day the day the shoes http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=593011

Have completely changed her feed to a "barefoot diet" and tried to gently work her in a way that'll improve her topline/weight without stressing her out or even using too much energy that will make her drop weight again. Ah that's ringing bells.

TBH I'd assumed she was something that you'd just bought - if she were mine (sorry) I would be horrified at her condition in January and obviously relieved at the improvement now.

I'm assuming the bad saddle sore is a result of a poor saddle fit - and that the horse is now turned away until the summer.

I thought that too, my first reaction to the first picture was 'What a mess'. But there is a improvement, but still a long way to go. Its not only lacking muscle and weight but its coats horrible and starey too and a dull depressed eye. I would even by tempted to get bloods checked.

I am horrified at myself, please do not think I'm not. She had a lot of issues going on including metabolic/laminitis. She also suffers from extreme anxiety. I have had 3 of the top vets in the South West see to her since I've owned her, so I have tried my hardest to pin point the exact issues which have caused the problem.

It's not a saddle-sore, she bruised her withers after her accident, and the hair fell out in areas. She has a professionally fitted saddle.

She's had bloods taken and a full lameness work up. All clear, apart from a few issues that I'm currently dealing with.
 
Poor mare sounds like shes had a tough time. For feed I would highly reccomend pure condition and linseed. Hope things work out for you and her, however, for weight gain let alone possible injuriesetc I would probably not work her until shes looking a better picture all round.

just trying to get to the bottom of this sore. Do you mean she bruised her withers IN the accident and then the hair fell out causing the sore you see now?

Not really sure you should be putting a saddle on this :(

It's just a bold patch now - the purple/pink you see is purple antibacterial spray that has yet to fade.
 
she's looking a lot better and will be stunning once she has filled out. I would be concerned about putting a saddle on as the the skin across her withers looks sore/broken?

Do you feed micronised linseed? I would if it was me. A mug a day, you can get big 20kg sacks form charnwood milling.
 
Hi, Yes she looks much better- still needing more muscle but like you say you know that already.
It sounds like you've had a tough time with her so im glad things are looking up for you.
As for the wither injury.... Ive just had to retire my 10 year old horse due to a xray showing us that at some point in the past (before I had him) he's fractured his withers and it *looks like* the injury wasn't treated so id highly recommend a xray of the area just to be certain. It cost me £140 for 5 shots including the sedatives- I wish his old owner had done it at the time.
 
She's put on a little bit of weight, but I wouldn't say there's a 'huge' difference. She still looks rather dull and poor to me. Sorry I can't share in everyone else's positive comments.
 
The saddle you are using (the jump saddle posted about previously(collected by courier??)) is that the one fitted to her? I would have expected the saddler to be looking to put something with TB panels on her personally......

There's not actually much you can do with broken withers other than strict cross tied box rest. We had a mare who went up and over backwards and cracked the top off of 3 vertirae. She now has mishapen withers - one side is much more filled out than the other - and she has one of those air filled saddles that is regularly checked and adjusted to suit and she is away happy hacking and xc-ing in her new home. Thinking on it, that was probably one of the stupid horses more minor injuries!

Can't think of when I posted about the saddle :confused:

I sold a saddle recently, a Shires Optimus but I never rode her in it. She currently has a Ryder jump saddle- can't remember the version.



Thanks for everyone's opinions - not all what I wanted to hear, but all very useful and at least something to look into.

RE the broken withers, I'm pretty sure something would have been picked up in the work up as she would have been sore if not in quite a lot of pain. As previously stated, 3 vets have been to see her and not one has picked up anything in or around the wither area.

yes, i can see that the purple area is wound spray what im asking is, was it a wound originally, i assume that's why there's purple spray on it? and was it caused by the fall?

There's something going on there. The horse's whole demeanor looks off to me.

Id certainly get withers x rayed as others have said. Really cant hurt.
