I have a 17.1hh tb and i am desperately trying to put weight/condition on him. Hes been off for 8 months due to kissing spine op and is now back in work obviously he has lost alot of muscle but his hips stick out and even ribs. He is fed top quality haylage as much as he wants, plenty of grass. Ive tried everything to put weight on and need some suggestions that are low heating as he can be a bit wild! Ive tried barley, blue chip, top spec, conditioning cubes alfa beet etc. I'm now running out of options! Please help! Any suggestions welcome! Many thanks

MY 16.1 TB in very light work (ridden once a week if he's lucky!) gets;

1 heaped scoop redi grass}
1/2 scoop speedi beet- dry weight} All soaked
1/2 scoop alfalfa nuts}
2 mugs Topspec balancer
1/2 scoop topspec conditioning cubes
1 mug of oil

Split in to two feeds. He also gets a snack ball with 1 big scoop of topspec conditioning cubes overnight.

He's turned out on poor grazing all day and had adlib lovely haylage overnight.

I think fibre and oil are the best way to go.

He was desperatly thin for a year. It takes time for them to build up especialy over a large frame. Stick with it

You say that you have tried barley. But have you tried barley plus. This is a slow release non heating feed and great for weight gain. My TB is also a poor doer. I had him on normal barley, failed to get any weight on. Tried every other weight gaining feed, all failed. In desperation I asked my vet for advice, his answer was barley plus. Since using this feed, lots of weight gain, contrallable behaviour. I would also reccommend vegetable oil as well. I know how frustrating it is to be unable to get weight on, but perserve until you find something that works for you.

Mine is 17 hands TB very lean and hard to keep weight on, very light work (2/3 hacks a week), very poor doer...

3 scoops Baileys no 4

3 scoops Alfa oil

splint in 3 meals

Linseed supplement in pm feed fab stuff

adlib Hay

You need to give time with feeds as they don't make instant change... took 6 weeks to notice small difference with baileys no 4, its also non heating.

Alfa oil is great as u can give as much you like without heating him up cos it's slow release engery..

Feed little and often, rule of thumb their stomach is the size of rugby ball so not very big, Little and often would give the body chance to absorb the important bits.

It would be good to lunge on pessoa as it helps to build back muscles...

another suggestion is ask 2008 as she has this experience of tb and Kissing spine

My tb at 4 1/2 weighed 350 really underweight and skinny.
He is on dengie alpha with oil .pasture mix and speedy beet and now weighs 510 and all muscle.When I really needed him to gain weight and top line I used d and h build up and swapped to pasture mix for maintenace.The alpha with oil is just easier to use than adding veg oil and is not so messy plus I know he is getting right amount is just preferences. Oil seems to work well on all tbs from what I have seen on this forum.

I personly find all those conditoning mixses, E.g. Baileys No4, a waste of money so when I got skinny Parker I just brought feed shops own brand of pasture mix 'Maintance Mix', Speedi Beat (Hard enough remembering to soak that 10mins before let only the 12/24 hour ones) and let Alfa A-Oil do what soya oil does best...

He gets 3/4 Maintance mix, 3/4 Afla A-oil and handful barely (In attempt for vaa vaa voom) in the moring and Covering of scoop pre soaked speedi beat, 3/4 Maintance mix, 3/4 Alfa A-oil and handful of barely again in evening. Large haynet at night and good turnout all though it is winter all the same.

I have had major problems and tried everything, and i am about to go onto winergy equilibrium growth. It is all fibre and oil, vv low starch so no fizziness and i have not heard one bad thing about it. When given at full ration (about 4 heaped scoops per day) it is meant to give ample weight. It is expensive but no other supplements etc etc is needed. Maybe worth a try?beleive me i know exactly how you feel, tried baileys no.4, calm condition, topspec, baileys outshine (which is great but didnt put on enough weight) basically everything!!So im hoping this is the answer for me
