My thoroughbred has dropped weight over winter as he has lived out due to no spare stables at my yard. He isn't in much work and is on 3 feeds of mix and sugarbeet and chaff a day. He has been wormed as is clear. Any advice how I can get weight on him?

Micronised linseed - 2 mugs a day
Good amount of speedibeet (e.g. 1 kg a day dry weight)
1-2 scoops of Baileys No.4 Topline Cubes
Ad lib haylage.
Drop the chaff.
Vet if all else fails.

Worked a treat on my TB this winter, good luck :)

If the chaff has a high energy value it will be worth feeding if the horse isn't getting any hay or haylage (you don't say if it is or isn't), but its better to think of the chaff as a haynet-in-a-bucket and feed it separately to avoid overloading the stomach. You don't say what mix you're feeding. You need to look at the energy content of feeds (Mj of DE/kg) and feed something that's higher energy than what you're feeding now. Cubes usually contain more fibre than mixes and are therefore better digested, the lower starch content if cubes is less likely to cause fizziness too.
