Hey all

Was thinking of starting to feed my boy Blue Chip as struggling to put/keep weight/condition on him. Does anyone use it and can anyone recommend it or something else that is good for this?

Thanks!

Never used Blue Chip but I am using Top Specc formula for my horse and he seems to be holding his weight much better plus I have been able to cut his feed down. They do two types, a regular one and one for laminitics.

I feed Top Spec conditioning cubes and they have helped but seen to have reached a plateau. Worried as going into winter and certainly not carrying any excess weight!!

One of my boys is 33 and would really lose condition during the winter if I didn't manage him very carefully. At a loss last year having tried everything the vet recommended Equijewel (saracen) and it was fantastic. My friend actually saw him a month later and thought I'd been exercising him as he had topline! Truth is he's been retired and a companion to my other 2 boys most of his life and hasn't been ridden since he was 8 due to a health problem. He is thriving on equi-jewel and I only have to give it to him during the winter. Without it he can easily look a bag of bones even though he eats so much, is wormed and wrapped in cotton wool! Topspec would have been my second choice. If you get equi-jewel get the cup that comes with it so you give the right amount as it's quite expensive, as are most of these types of feed. xx

I just replied about the Top Specc - read Christie Fairburns article on the front page of the H & H about feeding show horses - she feeds Top Specc......

I use Equijewel on a horse that is thin and cannot tolerate soya - it works but is very expensive
I also kept weight on a herring of a 31 yr old using D&H Build up cubes plus Simplesystems Linseed meal

Yes, have seen wonderful results on a TB mare who decided to try anorexia for a bit to wind her mum up bigtime. They love the taste and eat up all their dinner, and it really does work, it's not just hype. She's also a lot calmer and more chilled out as well. We used to give her a magnesium calmer as she needed it, but don't need to do that any more (theres magnesium in the BC). I've only ever seen good results on it on a number of horses/ponies.

Don't waste your money and put him on boiled barley, sugarbeet and a table spoon of vegetable oil. It is THE best thing to put weight on and he'll look fab in a few weeks.....plus it's really cheap.

Equi Jewel worked for me but at £30 a sack which only lasted a month, ontop of all the other feed I could only afford it for one winter.

Last winter I tried soaked oats which someone on here suggested. Results were amazing. One sack at about £5 lasted 3 months. Rosie doesn't hot up on dry oats so I wasn't worried about that side of things, plus she was in some work so not worried about the exercise side of things either. Thought it was amazing and will be buying my first winter sack soon

I found with Miss Delia, my TB who dropped off weight, that feeding equimins pro-bio made a huge difference and saved me lots of money. I also personally have had great results with spillars conditioning cubes.

I did try blue chip and equilbra, but to be honest, pro-bio and benevit with conditions cubes worked better and was more economical.

I used to feed pro-bio to all my horses and they all kept weight and had no problems with colic or change of grass runs. Only stopped as I now feed brewers yeast and linseed (for sweet itch and joints) which seems to have the same effect on the stomach as the pro-bio.
