Hi All,

Have just had a huge disaster with using protexin with my mare- really bad reaction to it and has lost about 25/30kg which she cant afford to lose :(
She is on three feeds a day, (calm and condition, linseed) adlib hay when in and is out on good grass at night.
She has been wormed, but I just cant get anymore weight on her and im worried with winter coming its only going to get worse.
She is really glossy coated but just no fat going on her!
Have also put her onto the Farnham weight builder as ive had good results on this before, but any other suggestions?

I cant put her on high starch feeds as she ties up, and she is barefoot so low sugars needed!

Anything out there that I haven't tried??

Thanks

She will probably pick up slowly, but if you want to get some extra calories in you can try adding oil to her feed. Doesn't have to be anything fancy, ordinary vegetable oil from the shop will do fine (use the cheapest). Some horses can get sloppy dung, but introduce gradually starting with 200 or so ml a day and up to 500ml split between all feeds.

I've recently made the mistake of swapping from my normal supplement to protexin's gut balancer... My boy changed to the point of me almost wanting to jack it all in and sell him within just a few weeks! Ive had confidence issues with him since he chucked me off - subsequently found to have ulcers, and hes been successfully treated, however he has what my vet describes as a 'sensitive disposition' so it becomes obvious when hes not 100% happy very quickly. He's been back on his normal supplement since Saturday... And I have my boy back to normal... The supplement I use is Alltech Lifeforce, I really can't say enough good stuff about it, don't quote me on the science but from a 'gut' point of view it makes sure they get as much goodness out of what they're eating as well as acting as a preventative for ulcers etc. google rutland horse extras, there's loads of info on there and they're really helpful too.

I will add though, I do like the quick fix for travelling... But I've only used it once so possibly not the best review...
