Maddie, my Welsh D cross (no other breeding provided in the passport, but she's definitely a Welshie!!), has been on regumate for the past two months. She's been far less spooky at home - long story, but she became hyper vigilant when we had a racing yard with 45 horses set up literally next door last summer. She has been fine out and about, but every spook had to become a drama at home, even in the field. Just to note, this isn't a case of adrenalin covering stuff when away from home - I am struggling with the words to explain it. but that isn't the case. Not blaming that yard at all as they are good neighbours, but it has been an unsettling time for her as the only mare in my, usually very settled, mini herd, and no other horses in the vicinity. Anyway, I digress..... She has packed on the weight since she started on regumate. It has also coincided with her being off work for a month in March (vaccination, which she has a tendency to react to, plus me being away on holiday), and the Spring grass coming through. Despite being a native cross, she was basically a whippet when I bought her 3.5 years ago, and I have had to feed in the past to maintain condition, so this is not normal. My vet/chiropractor came out today and agrees that she is normally very trim (in a good way). She has taken bloods to check for EMS as she is obviously the type/breed that could be susceptible. She also checked for pulses but nothing there. She did mention that there is still much uncertainty about the links between estrogen and insulin. I would be interested to hear about anyone else's experiences if they are similar. I feel a bit stuck between a rock and a hard place, as she has become so much more relaxed on the regumate, she still looks at things, but doesn't have a meltdown, but I obviously need to keep her weight under control. Thank you in advance for any answers.
