Weight gain without the fizz

New boy has dropped a bit of condition since arriving (much to my horror

). He has a pretty small appetite and does best when turned out, he's at college with me so I can only turn him out for 4 hours a day on poor grazing. He has all the hay he could possibly eat but it goes very slowly. My problem is that I've been told not to feed him anything other then alfa a (otherwise he'll go off his tree) so his feeds at the moment consist of:
- 1 1/2 scoops alfa a
- Corn oil
and he's just started on blue chip pro. He looks really well (his coat is gorgeous!) but he's just looking a little lean. Is there anything that I can give that won't send him on one?

What about leaving some readigrass (or something similar) in his stable to replace the grazing?

The only other thing I can think of is adding grass nuts or high fibre cubes to his alfa a.

Good luck, he sounds like he's going to be a tricky one to feed!
 
the oldies at my yard are fed soaked fibre nuts mixed with alfa a, obviously as they are basically retired they are kept off fizzy foods. This works really well for them. Soaking them mean you need less of them as well as it seems like a lot more!
 
Have you thought about adding some sugar beet? We took in RSPCA rescue horses at my old yard, Ralph was one of them! The YO always fed Dengi hifi, sugar beet and nuts. Obviously, you could scrap the nuts. All the rescue horses thrived and were all re homed

Ralph is just fed on dengi hifi light, baileys low cal and sugar beet now, he's the bay in my sig!

Another vote for Calm & Condition, worked wonders on my TB mare, who is very fizzy, she has it with Graze On and is doing wonderful, not a weighty horse, but has a nice "little" round belly...........
 
I really rate calm and condition bails is a geriatric TB that thinks hes 3 he looks fantastic on it and although it doesn't sedate his need for speed it certainly doesn't enhance it, he also has a sensitive tummy so we keep it simple just C&C and hi-fi senior, he gets up to a scoop in the winter reduced down depending on the grass.
 
I feed my very excitable TB Alfa a oil and alfalfa pellets, he get the pellets in a ball so he entertains himself for ages pushing it around and eating what falls out. In the winter he has alfa beet too. He does drop some weight but not as much as he used to.
 
Another vote for calm & condition here!

I was warned the horse I have on loan would go nuts if i fed him anything other than fibre, but i'm doing more with him than the owner was and he needs more than just alpha. The calm and condition hasn't sent him nuts :-)
 
MY TB does well on Alfa Beet and Baileys Top Line Conditioning Cubes (defo cubes n not the mix!!), twice a day. Hes retired, but looks better than some of the TBs who are in work!
 
Winergy Growth... have seen this used on a variety of different types of horse on our yard and its always added weight and never sent anything loopy. Use it on my TB who can be prone to fizzyness and cribbing on other fattening feeds and she is gaining weight and totally chilled out, infact she is a little too chilled...! Plus you dont need to feed extra oils/balancer.
 
I'm not really a fan of cam and condition, I used it on missy for about 2 months and it maintained her poor condition...she didn't put any on!
Fibre nuts I've used before with great success (can't think why I didn't think of them before!), and I'll give the readi grass a go because somebody else has suggested them to me.
