I have owned my boy for nearly 2 years and have had every test possible done to see why he wont put any weight on...

He gets turnout onto decent grass from around 9 untill about 5 everyday
2 big haynets of hay a night
3 feeds a day of calm and condition, sugar beat, weight gain and hifi
He is not in full work, ridden around 3-4 times a week schooling hacking and lunging with a tiny bit of jumping.

Before im at my wits end and call the vet out again, last time i was told there was nothing wrong with him... Can anyone recommend anything which will really help him with his weight?

Have you spoken to any nutritionalists?

My lad is the same, and I emailed 3 separate feed companies, which all said what I was feeding was okay

I feed:

220g lo-cal balancer
1 Scoop sugar beet
1 scoop Alfa A oil

All spread over 3 meals

I also give him a bucket of Alfa A oil with 1 1/2 scoops in in the middle of the day and a huge haynet at night. However he is also out 24/7. This has made him put a lovely amount of weight on, and i'll cut down/out the Alfa A bucket soon

Maybe he's just getting too much good and not enough work?

How old is he?
How big is he?
Type?
How long per session do you exercise for?

Vets can do a test for malabsorption but before that I'd start feeding Yea Sac as it aids hind gut digestion and is a very mild appetite stimulant. I'd also start him on Coligone just in case he has gastric ulcers. What management is he on? He needs company and as much turn out (in company) as possible to keep him happy and sane. Stress due to lack of the above can cause gastric ulcers which then cause weight loss and more stress. Bottom line is if he is till losing weight or not able to maintain weight, he may need veterinary investigations and I'd start with a blood test to include liver function.
