Does anyone know what it is please? I've done a Google search but can't find the answer - I thought adults shouldn't ride in them but I am seeing more and more of them using them.

Thanks in advance

I didn't think there was a weight limit, I used to ride in them with my first horse a few years ago and they were fine, they were part of his tack when I bought him so I didn't choose to have them but they were fine to use.

Its 8-9 stone. There is a weight limit which is why the bent leg stirrups were invented. There is a reason for the weight limit, but i cant remember - something to do with the metal not being up to strength as the stirrup is not continuous where the rubber band goes. I cant remember exactly.

I am? wow, memory must be better than I thought it was. I have a fear of being dragged and always have some kind of safety stirrup on my saddle.

thanks Laafet!

Why is it so dangerous? The worst I see happening is the metal gradually bending hence opening up the angle, if it did suddenly snap for some reason you would just lose a stirrup

I'd ask the manufacturers now seeing as there have been advances in technology. There are some stirrups on the market now that are totally open on one side and I guess they've been extensivly weight tested!

Thanks everyone, that's about what I thought. My worry is that not only are most adults over 8-9 stone, it is mostly novice adult riders I am seeing using them, and they tend to be unbalanced and therefore put more weight into their irons than is preferable

It's just that when I start telling them to change their irons I would like to have some facts to back my advice up with

I also spend a lot of time swapping people's irons round (Peacock and bent leg and flexi-tread) when they have them back to front

No, if they snap it could cause a horrible fall

Just imagine if it happened while someone was jumping

Lol if only you could see the age of the tack that some of the people I teach use

Trust me, advances in technology haven't quite reached here yet

I am tactfully trying to advance them week by week

I would never recommend an adult using these.
I used to use them for fear of being dragged.
I was out hunting on day, galloping across afield, and one of the irons snapped....no warning at all.
I was impressd with myself for staying on!!!

My daughter ( who was only about 8 at the time) had a terrible fall whilst using peacock stirrups. Pony was very sharp and I had that gut instinct something was going to happen. Long story short the pony spooked and did the wall of death before she fell half off and was bounced about like a rag doll (over trotting poles too) with one foot in, one foot out. The only reason she broke free was because her jod boot came off!

Luckily a trip to the hospital resulted in nothing but bruising but have never used them since.
