Does anyone know roughly the weight limits that most riding schools have?

I'm 23, 5ft 7 and weigh 14st 7.

Am i too heavy to ride???

Wanting to start back after christmas after a 12 year break. Mainly because i miss it sooooo much but also to improve my health, weight and fitness.

Would you advise i lose some weight and work on my fitness before i start back? or start back and build my fitness and lose weight whilst doing something i love?

You might want to build up some fitness by walking or cycling first as riding will be a killer on your legs after such a long break, but as the others have said ask the riding school. Some have no weight limits and others are as low as 11st.

If you are looking at loosing weight and building fitness once a week riding would probably not be enough. Have you spoken to your GP about it as it's always a good idea to do so before starting any fitness programme?

Good luck.

Each riding school is different. Mine is 16stone, if you're in the south east PM me and I'll give you some info about it.

The limit at our riding school is 14 stone but we only have a few weight carrying horses. We always ask new riders their weight and if they look like they might be overweight we ask them to go on the scales. It can be embarassing at times but we aren't prepared to let our horses carry too much, it's not like they only get ridden once a day, they are working animals and we have to look after them.
A chunky horse can easily carry your weight, it's just that riding schools have to be extra careful as their horses are their livelihood.
I hope you find somewhere, I think a lot of riding schools don't even have a weight limit so you may be ok.

Our Limit is 15st but we only have two horses available that we allow to carry this weight - as said before we have to look after our horses as they do work but also that I and my staff care about the horses and I would rather so 'no' to a new client to help and save our horses ! We are in the midlands if that's any help.
