Weight Limits!!!!

I know all horses come in different shapes and sizes as do us riders firstly how much do u think a saddle weighs??? and what do u think you would class as a comfortable weight from say an arab to a 16hh cob i weigh 12st and am so concious that im heavy for my horse ....... just want to see what responce i get from you guys befour i send u a pic.
 
Saddles vary in weight depending on type/style etc... but on average I would say about 1 stone.

The weight an Arab can carry will depend on how big and how much bone it has, but they are generally quite capable of carrying a fair weight for a long distance...................there are a fair few endurance riders who will vouch for that.

How much weight each horse can carry not only depends on their size conformation, but also how long they going to be expected to carry that weight for and how balanced the rider is etc...

IMO in general people tend to grossly under estimate how much a horse can carry and seem to think they will break if the rider weighs more than a feather!!!!
 
This topic is interesting to me as I am a heavy adult, weighing in around 14 st, and I am very concious of being too heavy for horses!
 
I have a 15hh trakehner very LW mare, and I was told her weight limit was 10st at her vetting, so this is what I have gone by, even though I think he just did it by looking. She has had a slightly heavier rider on and has not struggled, though it is not something I would want to do every day. A HW cob of the same size however is likely to be able to carry a lot more.
 
My instructer told me that yes i may weigh 12st but i ride light where as a 9st rider could ride heavy i kind of get what she is saying but also if a horse can carry you comfortable can they jump to a set hight comfortably or wen u go above say 3"6 should u be lighter as there trying harder??

Could not agree more. We come from Highland Pony country and no-one bats an eyelid at hefty adult males riding 14.2 ponies. I ride a 14.2 cob who can go all day with me on his back, in fact after 2 / 3 hours hacking with lots of trotting and cantering the biggest problem is still holding him back, and I'm over 15 st.
