I have been through the mill a bit lol and gave up horses 2years ago; however, my dream filly is coming home in November after spending two years of getting my career sorted and totally letting myself go? , I am now joining the horse ownership again and attempting to get myself fit again!! ??

Anyway I have been on slimming world and lost 3stone so far, I am 14stone now, What weight would you be comfortable for someone to enquire about part loaning your horse?

I totally understand it depends on the horse etc but I have enquired regarding a few then get no answer when I tell them my weight and they are IDs x or cob x etc.... I am going to wait till I have lost at least 2 more stone I think anyway! But would be good to hear peoples honest opinions - I promise I will not take offence! haha!

I remember when I had mine I would never have contemplated a larger rider - but they were TBs and warmbloods x - so totally understandable!!

Well done!! I think you’re right in that a couple more stone and you’ll have more options available to you. Horse market even for loans and shares is abit mental at the moment.

Well done for losing so much weight (particularly at the moment, all I want to do is eat).

It does depend on the horse but I think at around 12 stone, you should be able to find something suitable to loan (maybe a well built cob?). To me, it would also depend on how balanced you are as a rider and what you want to do. If you're balanced, you help a horse to carry you if that makes sense? It may be worth taking up Pilates because that really helps core stability in the saddle.

Obviously, the more weight you lose, the more choice you will have.

Well done on the weight loss! As someone who until recently (I've lost 2 1/2 stone during lockdown) weighed around what you weigh now and has had sharers for my horse (and shared a friend's at the same time - it's complicated!) I wouldn't consider 14st to be a problem if the horse was up to it (my two were - mine is retired now and share horse's owner's son has started riding him more so I've bought a new one who is a very similar build). From looking to buy though, I know your market is so much more limited if you need one that can carry a certain amount of weight. I'd say keep an eye out now but be prepared for it to take a bit longer to find the right one. It took me a year to buy, but that's partly because I was spoilt with my boy and my share horse so I was very fussy!

Well done you - amazing progress!

12 stone is probably a sensible figure to aim at - that's 75kg-ish, then adding tack brings that it up to 80kg-ish, so within the 15% for a 550kg horse
