Prince the pug will be coming to us at the end of January, and he currently weighs a whopping 25lbs. He was a hefty 32lbs, so his weight *is* coming down, though it seems he's hit a bit of a plateau. A quick check of the pug standard suggests male pugs should weigh a maximum of 20lbs.

I have zero experience of overweight dogs. How much do I feed him--an amount suited to his ideal weight, or a bit less than what he currently gets, and then gradually decrease the food as he loses weight? And what about exercise? He is grossly unfit, and is only used to a couple of 15-minute walks a day. Do I add in an extra five minutes per day and build up from there?

I'd like him to be able to chase and sort of keep up with speedy Stella

Exercise exercise and more exercise

....plus a decrease in food to the recommended amount for his breed and age.Look at the food contents to and make sure they are suitable.are they very vegetable and cereal based?or is there real meat used...not just meat derivitive's...

I wouldnt cut it down to far below the recommended amont unless he is very sedentary and unable to do a lot of exercise.
Like humans its all about keeping a balanced diet and slow weight loss,so cut out the treats but give him the nutrition his body needs.

With the walks little and often, is its possible, is a good way. he likely wont be able for lang walks to start with but after a while he'll get more stamina so he can have longer walks with your other dog.

We had a very obese lab and with this method it did work quite well...ive photos somewhere...her issue was overfeeding and a lack of exercise though.
So also look at why the pug is as fat as he is and go from there....
Also every where you can include activity in his day.get him playing chase in the house, encourage him to run and play as much as possible. The more active he is the better....

Ps i love your Boston terrier, ive come across one in real life but seeing pics of stella make me think they are great little dogs!
