I checked Toby's weight tonight using a weigh tape, well I was a little confuddled really as it was reading that he is the weight for a 19.1hh horse... uuuummmm??.... he's only 15.1hh it read 524kgs so I don't know if I was reading it wrong or not?

maybe I will buy another weigh tape and try that.

he's a 15.1hh connermara 17yrs old so what do you think he should weigh?
he's in light work at the moment

My 15hh cob x mare ( not very chunky) is 470kg. She was 530kg in March which the vet said was too much! She is pretty perfect now although I would still like her to drop a few kg. She is pretty fit and does have a fair amount of muscle. Our 14.2 mare is 440kg but she is slightly chunkier. I'm not sure how accurate weight tapes actually are but it does show me whether they have gained or lost weight.
Toby sounds like he is an ok weight but how does he look overall if you fat score him?

Cant help you re weight of toby but i dont need a tape to tell me lass is fight and - before I get jumped on - yes i know she is over weight she is stabled every night winter or summer and feed regulated and certainly no tit bits. in winter she is totally rugless regardless weather but shes a typical native and good doer - the one saving grace she as no fat crest but its a constant worry added to by work being limited due to her sight but hey the last time vet was out to check her eyes she said "yes was over weight but given circumstances she blossomed with health " so i will continue to juggle lol

My 15hh girl is 800 kilos :eek::eek::eek:

But then she is crossed with some kind of draught horse so is naturally "big boned". lol.

She is also a good doer and prone to fatness.

this is him week ago...

I don't see how he's too overweight, he has started to get a slight crest so I lunged tonight (i'm unable to ride at the moment due to me not him) and will continue I've stopped all tit bits no apples carrots nothing.
cut his hard feed down as he isn't being worked too much at the moment.
and he's out from 7.30am to about 5pm on ok grazing and in at night with 2/3 sections of hay

My laminitic 13.3hh is 345kg, but a bit ribby, although still has good coverage over neck & quarters. Vet has said not to try & put too much weight on her, despite her being a poor doer.

Merlywerly, your horse looks in great condition to me.

My 15.2 irish x is usually between 470kg-520kg and in light work. I think your boy looks great, wouldn't worry. Better to have a little extra coming into winter anyway.

Biggest Fuzzy is 15.2 & cannot by any means be called a LW build :D

On 2 weigh tapes she weighs 690 and 820

In real life (Like Monkeybum's horse) the true weight is 620 - or it was 2 weeks ago :) this was not allowing for 4 shoes on too.

Make of that what you will............

In the flesh, there is too much covering IMHO, but we are both reasonably fit & I wouldn't worry about drag hunting 2 full lines tomorrow, tho we need a bit more off to cope with 3 lines at present so are right on course for mid october with our programme :)

Good lord! - have you got a pic.

OP I'd have said on condition scoring your ponio looks fine.

My boy weighed 598KG on the weightape but was 650KG on weighbridge - he's lost the 50KG they suggested and I'm going to take him a little lower just to give myself some leeway.

I use the weightape as a guide to changes.

Weightapes are a waste of time. :p

You horse looks a perfectly fine weight to me :) I think the reason you think his neck looks cresty is because he looks to be quite muscled UNDER his neck. Is he a cribber? Or does he struggle/stretch to look over his door?

my 3yo 15hh PBW, according to a weigh tape is 408 kg but she has dropped slightly would like to get her back to about 420kg where she looks good :) nice overall covering, merlywerly he looks in fab condition!

Not so - they give an indication of changes in weight over time if you don't have regular access to a weigh bridge - regardless of the fact that the actual weight indicated may be nonsense.

By tape my 15hh cob is 430kg - interestingly the same as my 14,2 highland who is in good condition (not fat) but has a deep rib cage (obviously being a highland).

The weight and heights on the tape aren't normally related - the heights are just there if you use them to measure your horse's height separately from his weight ;)

he has a tendancy to try and crib yes but only when I am not there this is a reason I moved him into the barn away from his wooden stable that he was happily chewing through :( :(

His stable door is fine for him too he's in a brick built barn now.

Surprised that there is such a mixed opinion on weigh tapes and is interesting to hear of others horses size and weight too.

after having to keep a very close eye on my old lad with his weight I am just trying to be so careful with my boy

My 15.1hh Welsh Cob is currently weighing 510kg on the weigh tape. I've got Spillers coming for a yard visit in October so will be interesting to see how much he actually weighs! He's a 46/48" girth and is porky at 550kg, fat at 560kg and definitely too big at 580kg (on weigh tape). The tapes might be useless for actual weight, but give a good indication of gain or loss. I did a formula too and he came out at about 600kg!

Curio, sorry but he's all mine! Spent far too much time away from him, plus he's a big wuss, I think he'd run away from a cart :p

Do you have a photo of yours? :D

He looks fine to me. Weight tapes are pretty useless TBH. They're fine for keeping track of whether a horse has lost or gained weight but they'll never give you an accurate reading so I wouldn't worry about it! :)
