At what weight would you ride an 11-13 hand pony

Was reading a thread earlier where someone said they spoke to someone who said they should ride their 11.2 despite them being too big. just wondered
would you ride an 11 to 13 hh pony if you were 8 stone, 9 stone, 10 stone, 11 stone or 12 stone or would you not ride at all?
just curious really.
i wouldn't ride an 11hh to 13hh pony despite being 5ft 4 even if i was 8 stone!
your thoughts?

at an old yard a woman weighing 13stone and fairly tall rode a 12 hand welsh A out on a hack. he was a chunky sort but i did think that was excessive...
 
Well I am 5'3"/5'4" and almost 8 stone. While I have ridden 12.2s in the past (actually 128 BS Ponies so more like 13hh) it has only been because they were being naughty/stroppy and needed a 'firmer hand'. I have also backed and brought on a few ponies at about 12.2/13hh although they have been native types. As soon as they were going sweetly enough they were passed onto a smaller rider. I really don't like jumping anything that size either!

I feel too big for anything much under 14hh, however I began riding as an adult and on horses, I never did the pony 'thing' as a child and think that might make a difference.
 
If a shetland and used to it, a grown man could ride (tho not an overweight or tall one)
If a fine show pony less than 8 stone

So varies completely on the pony type/breed and also what it is being asked to do
 
I think your height range is too wide. I voted 8 stone as I was thinking of an average 12 hh pony but there's a huge difference between a skinny 11 hh pony and a stocky 13hh one which could probably take 10 stone or so.
 
I'm 7 and a bit stone but i am 5ft 6/7. I have ridden a 12.2hh quite regularly and she was fine with me but i don't think i'd ride an 11.2h purely because i'm too tall and I wouldn't feel comfortable riding something that height even though it would probably carry me ok for a short time. I'd feel comfortable riding a 12.2hh upwards but i do feel too tall but weightwise i'm light enough so if i needed to/was asked to i would :)

if you read an earlier post you can see that i said in the instance that all of the ponies at this height were stocky native types..
 
That's an 8 inch difference in height though so what i'd put on an 11hh would be different to a 13hh of the same build :)
 
I used to have a 12.2hh Exmoor pony, he was well built and was able to carry me easily. Loved to jump and would fly over jumps with me with ease. At the time, i was 5ft 4" and was about 9 and a half stone.

used to ride a 12.2 and both the vet and the physio said she could carry 16 stone - not that i would put that on her obviously haha the most she ever carries is 10 stone and she is none the worse for wear its just the height that is a bit difficult :o
 
I have a stocky 12.3 exmoor and he has no problem carrying me, we love flying around the place. I'm 5ft 6 and around 9 stone.

There is another 12.3 pony at our yard owned by a small skinny 11 year old who can't weight more than 6 stone. This pony is a tiny light little thing and the little girl is sadly going to have to move on to a new pony within the next few months as she is just getting too heavy for her.

The difference between the two is is night and day even though they are the same height.
 
I'm 5'4 & approx 50kgs (just over 7 stone?) and I have ridden shetlands, 'young' Sec As (ie not fully filled out so dont look quite so chunky!), Sec Bs, riding ponies etc at around 12hh no problem. Rode my own Sec A til we sold him and he certainly had no issues!!
