Weight Supplements?

Well the first thing I would do in your shoes is up his haylage - so that there is always some left over. That way you can be sure he's getting all he needs.

You may also want to think about feeding more calories through his hard feed - so Alfa A oil, and a conditioning cube together with the sugar beet. But ultimately it is the haylage that should hopefully make the most difference.

Remember, grazing in the winter has little in the way of nutrients, so out all day will have the benefit of allowing him to graze and move around, but won't provide any calories.

Also, making sure that he is always warm enough will ensure that he's not using calories to keep warm, which will also have the effect of helping a horse lose weight.

Hi Everyone,

Can any recommend any supplements or feed that are good for helping older horse to maintain weight? I have a 17.2, 21 year old gelding that is prone to dropping off quite easily.

Thanks

Jen xx

For my 17.1 & 16.1 I used to use Baileys No.4 Conditioning cube never had a problem is weight loss until I stopped using it just mixed small amount into feed.

The 17.1 was a Hannovarion x ID. the 16.2 was ID.
