How do you find getting weight off easy? I find it easy in the winter, our 3 are at good weights now but i know when they go out 24/7 onto spring grass it is going to be a battle again
Well my good doer is a nightmare to keep weight off! Have an IDx who is on a diet even now, in the depths of winter!
To keep him at a good weight, he gets pretty much no hard feed, can't have adlib haylage or hay, and worked 6-7 days per week, twice a day if you include walker every morning and hacking, schooling, jumping etc. The only chance I have to keep him trim is to limit all calorie intake and hunt it every week
I have never had a good - doer, but there are management options ie stabling, restricted grazing, muzzles, exercise etc
However, with really poor doers, especially veterans there is only so much you can do to get the weight on. Also, it seems to take a longer time to get weight on than to get it off.
Having said that, I only have the option for grass livery on lots of acres at the moment and, with the spring grass looming, I am enjoying the fact that I have a nice lean tb rather than a fatty fat fat cob!
I've had both and its easier keeping the weight off a good doer than putting it on a poor doer. You can limit the amount of feed a good doer can get with grass masks etc, but you can't make a poor doer eat more than they want to. Its really annoying!!!
