i would go with worming too! also have you had his teeth checked?
other than that i would suggest that you give him as much fibre as you can, and keep him warm with rugs. even try giving him an entire bucket full of speedibeet with his hay, as the extra fibre soon helps to put some weight on without making them silly!

he was wormed 4 weeks ago with an ivermectum, he is due again in 2 weeks, I was thinking of doing a pancur 5 day (please excuse spelling) just to be on the safe side what do you think??

Good idea about the speedey beat, I have been feeding him three times a day at the moment.

he is all toasty warm with three rugs

hi i dont think is to do with worming thoughbreds have a tendency to not be up to weight aswell as being work as a racehorse are you feeding the right amount ? try feeding him alot of sugar beet and corn oil is good for weight gain also weight gain mix grass alone should put weight on so maybe through spring and summer he may pick up if not then this may be the time to put all the stops out to c if theres any problems just watch what you feed him as thoughbreds can go slightly fizzy p.s if its worming he would of also had adull coat

I did a panacur 5 day gaurd on my new horse last year because I wasn't happy with how he was looking after an initial worming. Perhaps check with the vet first??

Hay, Hay and more hay. And I also found Spillers veteran conditioning cubes worked wonders on a TB I had a few years ago. He was only 15 but never looked great. After being given him I just rammed the food and hay in to him and the transformation was amazing.

Also - wait till Dr Green starts comming through - that should make a huge difference...

How long have you had him??

I have been feeding my TB on Baileys No.1 it is fantastic and in 3 months he looks like a proper horse and he has a tummy!! He now has baileys no.4 for topline as he has all the weight there now I just need to build his topline up. he is also on speedy beet (sp) too, with chaff. I did also originally use calm and condition but I didn't think that worked too well on it's own for the amount I needed to put on him. Allen and page weight gain is also very good and the best thing is none of them are heating. the other thing I did change was from hay to haylage but then he gets turned out all day and I ride every evening so he didn't get the chance to get fizzy. Good luck with your new addition and I hope all goes well for you

thank you I have never had a TB before he is such a lovely pony and we love him loads just so worried about weight but I am sure you are right my trainer is coming tonight so I will see what she thinks I think I am panicing for nothing probably thank you so so so much for the advice make me feel loads better!

he arrived about 3 weeks ago he is lovely, he came out of racing and was turned away and did not fair so well and was very thin, you can see his ribs but I took all his rugs of last night and his coat is all shinny and I think he is getting better but I am sure as soon as DR Green come to see us it will be better, he is just settling into his new life as an eventer hopefully!!

anytime i use to work and deal with them so i know what they can be like with weight etc anyway let me know how he gets on

i agree bout dr green but i also put my then skinny thoroughbred on pig nuts yep i no sounds a bit strange but they realii do work for puttin on weight. i also put him on benevit supplement which is also gr8. but i also agree bout baileys no1 i put my boy on it this time of the year. good luck
