Vet came out to see my horse and got told of for his weight i try so hard hes muzzle all day handful of safe and sound soaked hay all day and only two sections of hay he weighs 570kg he has five inch bone so i put him as lightweight cob and he 16.2 he has leg problem i do ride everyday but not hard he sweats a little how much should he weigh and how much roughly does everyones eles weigh my vet whats him 500kg this horse in fourteen years has never had ribs not born with any im sure

Does he really need to be on a feed - in the summer? If he's having hay all day and is at grass he will be getting all he needs. He is sweating due to him being over weight and maybe unfit due to that problem. I would gradually over a week cut out his feed, keep at grass as much as possible and put him on a good exercise regeme. I'd say lunge for a good 30 minutes a day or use a walker while your mucking out and then ride for nice hack with a couple of good trots. What is his leg problem? Could it be worse as he is over wight? Is he shod?
Oh, dont let him gorge on grass as he is overweight he will have more chance of becoming lamanitic.

must explain my self a lot better he does go out all day in muzzle only has two section of hay a night. due to leg problem lungeing is a no no he has collatral ligament damage he get safe and sound purely to give him his huge amount of supplements yes the more weight he carries the worst for his leg have got a horse walker but he turns round in it and forces it to go the wrong way then breaks it i walk him on the roads but no trotting on them but we do quite a lot in the school still huge he does sweat because he fat and over weight

Just read your notes again. 500kg seams a little too light for a mid weight 16.2hh cob. I have a 16.2hh TB and he is about 530kg at the moment and still has a little top line to put on so i would say your horse should be about 540-550kg. Maybe thats just the way he is. Does he caugh at all? Some overweight horses tend to get respiratory problems when they are overweight. Does he have any tell tell signs of anything like that?

yes your right 500kg to me sounds to light but thats what the vet said and no he never coughs and breathing is fine he just learn another trick how to get muzzle of thank god he on poor grazing but still enough for him to look like a hippo its just every time the vet see him i get told off what a bad owner i am allowing him to get so fat and im shorting his life and how bad for his leg but iv always been so careful i feel such a faliure sometimes but my horse thinks gut first everything else is second

I completely agree with FabioFrench, I've also got a 16.2 TB who weighs about 530kg at the moment and he's WAY under weight. Can't imagine your boy should really be down to 500KG, can't see how he could be! It's not as if he's having huge amounts of food thrown at him! I'm guessing the vet is a bit overly concerned because of his injury? Don't go beating yourself up about it, all you can do is try your best, sometimes vets can be a little harsh on us poor horse owners x

To be honest i think that vets tend to go by textbook when it come to things like weight. They never seam to think that each horse is different. I have been thinking about how you can get your boy to loose a little bit of weight. What feed and supplements is he on? Also, how old is he? Could it be an underlying problem like an underactive thyroid? The other thing it could be if he's on very short grass. When grass is short and just the shoots it contains a lot of sugar which may lead to weight gain. Do you have an area away from grass where you can turn him out for a couple of weeks and just keep him on hay? Maybe get yourself a weigh tape and use it once a week to see if he losses any. That might help. With regards to the feed and suppliments, just wondering if there is something in them that might be a cause factor of weight gain. There isn't too much protein in safe and sound but maybe he would benefit from something pure follage to mix his sups into and keep off the hard feed until winter. I wouldn't sugest anything that is mollassed or has afalfa in.

your right kara may have got it wrong will check again i used his weigh tape so its possible. and to fabiofrench the problem with my horse he is a lump if i put him in the school he jumps out if i put him in starvation paddock he breaks the fenceing this horse would kill for food so not a option he been blood tested no other health problems and looking at ingredients in his supplements nothing to make him fat.this morning put him in the field with muzzle always hoping he keeps it on he broke the fenceing and came back to his stable. I have put him on hi fi light refused to eat it and i need to give him his supplement.
