Sorry yet again another dog question

. I have been looking at both breeds of dogs and I really like them both.

Which breed would you recommend more? There doesn't seem to be alot different - from what I have read - between both breeds. Thanks again, your replies from yesterday really helped

Well I have to say Weimies because I have one but I like both dogs just as much to be honest. From the Vizlas I personally know they seem to be a little more timid and sensitive but this might be just the ones I have seen.

They are both hard work, need proper training and lots of exercise and attention but are great with the family and very loving and make you shout and laugh every day.

Personally I think you can't beat a vizla but I've got one so I am biased!!!

Here is an extract from wikippeda about Vizlas, might help you make up your mind!!!

..............Vizsla represents one of the best in sporting dogs and loyal companions and has a strong claim to being one of the smallest of the all-round pointer-retriever breeds.......

.........Vizslas are very high energy, gentle-mannered, loyal caring, and highly affectionate. They quickly form close bonds with their owners, including children. Often they are referred to as "velcro" dogs because of their loyalty and affection. They are quiet dogs, only barking if necessary or provoked. Sometimes when these dogs feel neglected or want something, they will cry.........

.........They will retrieve on land and in the water, making the most of their natural instincts. However, they must be trained gently and without harsh commands or strong physical correction, as they have sensitive temperaments and can be easily damaged if trained too harshly...........

..........The Vizsla wants to be close to its owner as much of the time as possible. Many Vizslas will sleep in bed with their owners if allowed, burrowing under the covers. These dogs make great pets and are adorable and very lovable, often wanting to lick your face........

Neither! You should have a Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla!!

Depends what sort of dog you're after imo, as from what I've experienced with Weims and other German breeds, they're very much always on the go and very headstrong. Whereas the Viz's are more laid back and willing to do as you ask not as they please (not saying they're all like that though, either breed).

We looked into this 2yrs ago and got a vizsla because we read/heard that personality wise Weimies *can* be aggressive, whereas reading/talking about vizslas indicated that they *can* be very shy. Quite simply we thought we would rather have the latter. She isn't shy at all, she is the bubbliest, bounciest dog in the world and we wouldn't be without her

and my Weimy hasnt got an ounce of aggression. I purposefully went for a bitch as well.

Just out of curiosity, not being funny, why? Was it because males can be more of a handful? Am genuinely interested

I hadn't heard about Weims being aggressive just headstrong. As they are characteristicly similar to the GWP, I know that you have to be firm with the males and make sure they know their place from day one. I know you should do that with any dog, but, from my experience, German breeds tend to be sharper if you don't do this.

You don't have that with the HWV. There's not really a difference temperamentally between males and females, even when the males have been used at stud.

Nothing to do with aggression. I only went for a bitch because I tend to get on better with them. I had a male Dalmation once but I found him very headstrong with a lot more to say for himself and a bit of a pain in the bum to be honest. He put me off for life, bless him.
Even though to look at I prefer the boys as they are a bit bigger and a little chunkier and I like big dogs, to actually own I always now go for bitches as they are just a little more sensitive and respond better to my commands and are not quite so 'in your face'.
This is a complete personel opinion as regards to dogs but in the horses I find I am better suited to geldings rather than mares and as for the cat.........I dont really mind as they just seem to sleep on my bed all day and trip me up the stairs.

Snap. I prefer bitches but don't do mares. I have to female JRs and a male JR and he's very sweet and well behaved but there's just something that make the bitches a little bit easier....brains probably!!

Hi there,

I would heartily recommend a Vizsla, I've had two bitches, both of which were easily trainable, very affectionate, eager to please, protective, and ideal dogs. Both have mine have coped well with being left upon their own, providing that they're well exercised, happiest when curled up in contact with you, not barky dogs, but with quite a vocabulary of sighs, groans and grunts. I've found them to be very horse friendly, and have been able to ride out with them running loose, although they do occaisionally stop to point.

As for Weimerarners, I've little experience of them directly, but friends who have them, have found them to be more stubborn than the easily biddable Vizsla.

I hope this helps
