Hi All

Just wondering if any of you had experienced this. When washing Ol down after riding earlier I noticed that under his chest behind front leg (where girth sits under belly slightly to side) there was a hard lump? He has one on other side but I think that is just the normal muscle there?? When I pur only small amount of pressure on the bigger lump he cow kicked (completely unlike him!) and is obv pretty sore there? Am worried about it as haven't noticed it before. I did think perhaps sore form girth but a) was fine doing girth up and when undoing it and whilst riding and doing up once more b)no obvious sores or rubbing????

Any thoughts greatly appreciated x

Could be a girth gall, or if your horse has sweated in this area a blocked pore, is that the same as a girth gall? Not too sure now Ive typed it. Anyway, perhaps using a wool girth sleeve will aleviate the pressure on it. Might be an idea to not ride for a day or two to see if it goes down. You could give your vet a ring for their input, Im sure they will be happy to give you a bit of advice over the phone.

A girth gall should go down soon and is certainly possible. You will see changes within a few days if so.

My vote would be a nodular sarcoid...although not painful in nature. If it doesn't go down, get some photos emailed to you vet and they can send them of to the lovely Prof Knottenbelt at Liverpool to diagnose - and he'll sort out a treatment plan if required too.

Wait for a few days to assess change, if none then check it out further. DON'T start putting weird and wonderful creams on first....you may aggrevate the situation and so I'd strongly recommend getting a diagnosis first.

Don't panic - even if it is a sarcoid it can be pretty easily treated :D

Hope that helps
Imogen
