Hi. Bit of a weird question but I am a strict veggie and have seen the way animals are killed for leather. But I am looking to get 2 new bridles and would prefer it from UK, with leather that is a by-product of outdoor reared animals being killed for meat anyway and that are humanely killed quickly (not halal etc). Cant find any exact info on any bridles I have been looking at. Price tag not an issue so would look into them being made etc.
Thanks in advance to anyone that may be able to help with that!

Im going to give it a bash. But to be honest I presume a lot of them won't have a clue where it actually comes from they probably get the leather in from wholesalers.

Long way round the issue, but if money is no object and it means a lot to you, you could in theory contact a farm which does it's own meat (like specialised breed/has organic farm shop attached) and ask if you could buy a hide, contact a leather workshop to tan said his and get a bridle made from it? That way you know exactly what you are getting and where it came from.

people like Black Country Saddlers, English Bridles, Flyde and Morris and Nolan would be a good start, I would imagine that they take a VERY keen interest in the origins of the leather they use. If you concentrate on the well respected names I think you'd be pleasantly surprised by the information they have though whether its in line with your needs is another matter

Good luck, I hope you find somewhere that can meet your needs

Good idea redders I will use that idea if I cant find others. I have emailed English Bridles already as I already have head collars from them (big fan before I became veggie). Will give the others a try too WelshD thanks for the ideas of would to contact, I'm a bit lost on what brands are good nowadays!

There is a chap that makes stirrup leathers. I think it's oak smoked tannery or something. He might be worth contacting. Apart from that your best bet is to speak to the manufacturers.

Have you been in a slaughterhouse, or just watched stuff on YouTube? My dad is a butcher and the hide from the beast he buys at market gets sold on into the leather trade.

What about synthetic? I believe the Tekna stuff is meant to be good

I have emailed a few so hopefully I get a few replies. Its not the actual killing of the animals that bothers me, its the how the animal is reared and the method used for killing. Yes I have a friend that works in a slaughter house, but I also know not all slaughter houses are the same and use the same methods.

Try asking Bakers, they are the only oak bark tannery left, great leather.

I have their stirrup butt in my workshop.
We buy in hides from various tanneries and wholesalers, we know it's tanned here and rely on them for good leather. Some is brought in from Morocco, Argentina in it's raw state and tanned here, making it English.
Best leather by far for strength, substance and durability is leather made from Aberdeen Angus that have been traditionally grass fed.
