Weird symptoms/behaviour.

I'll be phoning the vet in the morning but just wondered if anyone might have any ideas.

History is female spayed collie, nearly 9 years old. Has been on Metacam since she was 6 as she has terrible hips and is very sore without. The past few days she's been doing a weird retching thing. Like she's nearly vomiting but nothing comes out. This can either be when she's been playing and running around, or just when she gets up from a nap. I'm pretty sure she hasn't eaten anything she shouldn't have as she's not a scavenger and she's with me pretty much constantly.

The second thing is yesterday I realised she had peed on the kitchen floor. She has not done this since she was a pup. Later, I went to let her out and as she stood up, I realised she was lying in a pool of pee. Like she'd done it when she was asleep and hadn't noticed. I'm really worried and will be ringing the vet first thing but just wondered if anyone might have any experience?
 
Have they been doing regular blood checks on your dogs organs being on long term NSAID? Xx any abdominal pain of you have a feel? Diarrheoa? Blood loss? Drinking more? Xxx
 
No, they have never done a blood test except before she started on the Metacam to check her kidneys were ok?

No blood, no diarhoea, eating and drinking normally.

The retching worries me as my friends elderly retriever used to do it and it turned out his heart was failing and the retching was him clearing fluid from his lungs. But he was 14, she's only 8 :(
 
She hasn't been anywhere that she could have got it and the last time she was in kennels was last summer and she was vaccinated before she went. It's like she has something stuck in her throat yet she's eating and drinking normally and seems happy in herself. I'm not sure if that and the peeing are related or just coincidence but I'm worried :(
 
Definately get to the vet for a check and i'd be pushing blood tests. Those sorts of meds need organ monitoring regularly. Might not have anything to do with it but still worth checking.

Have they ever reported a heart murmour at check ups? Can you feel her heart beat and tell us what her heart rate is? What colour are her gums? They should be nice and pink. whats her respiratory rate? xxx

Her gums appear pink and healthy. HR IS 60bpm and resps are 28 per min. Is that normal?

Always said her heart sounded fine at check ups etc. I will definitely ask for bloods to be done.
 
If she is settling down and resting without being distressed don't worry to much about heart- my old dog had a heart prob and when bad he just wouldn't settle.
Echo above are gums healthy colour? No excessive breathing?
My Newfy had pneumonia and was making retching sound but again wouldn't settle- according to the vets that's common symptom with chest problems.

It could be she has a urine infection or similar and hence is incontinent- like old people get also. And maybe just the cold is getting to her lungs?
Wormed regularly? They can make funny sound when have lung worm also.
 
Yeah heart rate and resp rate within normal limits, i wouldnt be concerned with those. Obviously a proper ascultation is needed to be sure.

Hmmm, urine infection possible although cant see a link with the wretching? Always worth taking a urine sample in with you so they can check everything (fresher the better!)

Got an appointment for tomorrow afternoon. I'll let you know what they say. No more peeing accidents tho the gagging/retching continues.
 
My cat started retching and gagging. She was diagnosed with a partially paralysed larynx which the vet said was very rare in cats, but quite common in dogs.
 
Have you noticed a change in her bark? Or any exercise intolerance? Things you would see with larangeal paralysis. Severe cases collapse and obviously with lack of oxygen that nice pink colour would go blue.xx

Strange one, keep us updated, interested to find out what it is now. So many differentials xx
 
Well I couldn't take her to the vet as we were snowed in :( However, there hasn't been anymore peeing and the retching also seems less and now only when she's been running around. Gums pink and healthy, no distress of any kind. I spoke to the vet when I had to cancel the appointment and she said not to worry. It obviously isn't an emergency and to bring her when the road conditions improve, hopefully tomorrow. I'll keep you updated.
 
Right, well, just back from the vet and she found................nothing!

The retching has stopped as has the peeing while she's asleep. Took her anyway and all obs are normal, gut feels fine, colour good etc etc. Mystery. She said to whip her back there if it starts again so she can see what I'm on about. Maybe whatever it was has resolved itself??
