My horse is coloured, but his white areas are quite sensitive. He has always had weird pink skin showing under where the girth is done up.
Now he has come up with patches of pink skin (approx 3x3 inches) on his upper and lower shoulder both sides. I had been cleaning with hibiscrub but it seems that there are light brown things in there that may be bot eggs.
Do you think this is the case? I don't understand why he has these pink patches and I am not entirely sure what to do about them.
He is out during the day (no rug at present) and in at night on shavings with no rug.
 
Um i have a pink skinned horse. . .the only skin related issue i have had would be sunburn. . .

But wouldnt explain the patches on your horse. . hmmm

Also i have only ever come across bot eggs which are yellow. . .hard to see on a grey horse

Well I just don't know because I asked someone else on yard who seemed to think 'spots' were grease. I think they are maybe botts eggs actually, the more I think about it? But this is a strange place for them to be? And I don't understand why there is so much pink skin for a few 'spots'. If I remove them with a bott knife I am unsure whether the pinkness will go.
 
Maybe you should leave it for a day or so and see what happens. . .might work itself out. . ?

I would guess (without seeing it) that he could have been rubbing, and that the brown things are actually a bit 'scablike' but not quite scabs as the skin was never properly broken iykwim??

My mare also has pink skin and last year, after changing shape, her saddle was rubbing....the only sign was when she was sweaty the bit being rubbed showed up more pink than the rest. When I got the saddle sorted, she also had brown 'bits' on the patch......

...........thats my only guess.......(but I thought bot eggs were yellow??!!)
 
I went with my friend to see her new coloured cob ned (mega hairy type I know) vetted. The vet started rooting deep in the hair and me being nosey (and owning a coloured hairy one myself!) I asked what he was looking for. He said that coloured horses often get patches of dermatitis that you see as sore, hairless circles in the coat. Dunno if it might be that? My rescue mare came to me with dreadful patches of dermatitis all over her body - she has severe ragwort poisoning and so suffers acute photosensitivity which I think didn't help either. I smothered the sore patches in sudocreme, sun block and, evantually, Bepanthen (a very expensive baby's nappy rash cream) and eventually got on top of it. Hasn't returned this year.
