This isn't a horse vet story but it's amusing anyway. Two cats appeared on our door step one evening, they hung around & after a few days we gave in, fed them & and they are still here 11 years later. Anyway we took them to a vet, got them examined to check they were healthy & looked at arranging spaying which they told us they could do. We contacted the Cat's Protection League& they offered us a couple of vouchers to pay for neutering but these could only be used at certain vets. We couldn't go back to the original vet as they weren't in the scheme so we went to another & arranged the spaying. I dropped the cats off in the morning & received a phone call from the vet. He said "Sorry I can't spay these cats" I asked why not to which he replied "They are neutered Toms". I related my visit to the first vet who had old me they were she cats, needed spaying & what did they want them to do with any kittens they may be carrying. The vet who we;d arranged to spay the cats said "This is a little worrying" & then he laughed.

Went to get my mare from the field and thought "why is she standing like that?" Checked her over, a little blood on her legs. Brought her in and investigated. Blood was coming from her vulva. Cold hosed her and went home. Went back in the evening and she wouldn't let me cold hose. Blood still dripping, so time for the vet. Sedated her and the vet had a good poke. She'd been bitten by another horse, and had a hole a centimetre deep in her vagina.

Why on earth would you allow another mare to nose around there, let alone stand still while they bit you?

Not mine, but somebody else on the yard. Horse came in lame, vet came out and said nothing serious, turn her out and let her walk it off for a few days. Owner luckily listened to her gut, kept horse in and got another vet to take x-rays. Horse had a really badly broken leg, and it could have shattered if horse had gone out on it. Months of box rest, very nerve-wracking rehab, and she is now fine.

My first horse needed to be sedated for something. Vet said maybe he got an artery instead of a vein, but vet practice put it down as an allergic reaction to the sedative. Horse collapsed and tore a patch of skin off her shoulder which needed stitching. Vet said he didn't think she would die, but was clearly worried. She was fine, luckily.
