When I got to the field tonight all seemed to be ok - gave my boy his feed then I noticed he was acting a bit weird...

He seemed to stretch out his back legs - he was almost getting into position to wee then he'd just move and start to graze again. This went on for about 20 mins I called the vet and spoke to them because was worried about lami - the vet said definitely didn't sound like lami as he appeared to just stretching more than rocking back onto his hind legs - if anything it looked like a back stretch or as if he was going to wee.

He did have a small wee and I walked him around and then he seemed to be ok. I went away and went back in an hour and he seems to be grazing normally - no sign of the weird behaviour.

Vet thought he may have had a touch of belly ache or trapped wind and not to worry if it had gone away. I'm puzzled and obviously a little worried and just wondered if anyone else has experienced anything similar??

Hi - I had just looked that up and seen that streching as if to urinate could be mild colic - hope he'll be ok, he wasn't sweating or in pain although he was occassionally kicking up towards his abdomen but looked as though he was troubled by flies more than in pain. Hopefully he had a mild bout and he's past it but worrying if perhaps I should go and get him in

I think all the signs point to mild colic - perhaps I should have asked the vet to come out but he looked much better so should I worry?

You should be vigilant, but don't worry.
Perhaps reducing your horse's feed (concentrates and forage) for a day or so would help (to rest the gut), but I'd leave him out if he were mine.
I'd check on him frequently - and if you see any other signs (sweating, pawing, curling upper lip, lying down, getting up, rolling or general weirdnesses) call the vet.
Hope he's ok.
S :D

I do hope your horse is ok, OH's mare got a nasty bout of colic last summer, what a horrible experience. (it was the first time I had seen a horse with colic). As a result I'm now a little bit paranoid with the two horses if they show any signs of discomfort

I did panic the other day when I went in my horse's box to find him sitting down (not very unusual ) and breathing heavily. Cue me breathing heavily and starting to panic, he rolled onto his side, groaned (at this point, me = ), did a HUMUNGOUS fart, got up directly and started snuffling around as if nothing had happened and has shown no signs of discomfort since. I guess they can get trapped wind too......................

The other possibility is that he might have a small bean obstructing the flow of urine. I know you'll be keeping an eye on him very closely over the next few days! Try and notice if he can have a good big wee. I'm sure he'll be fine - they do like to frighten us don't they!

Thanks for all your replies - I worried like mad about him last night went to check on him this morning and he seems ok - I watched him do a poo - was a bit wetter than normal but other than that he wasn't showing any signs of discomfort or stretching - thank god. They do frighten us for sure - mind you I frightened myself by going home and reading all the horror stories on here and other sites - in the end had to just step away from the laptop and go to bed...

My mare did something very similar to this a few months ago. She kept walking around her box and stretching back legs, took her 4 a walk and put her back in and she kept stretching so got vet and he said she had mild colic and gave her a muscle relaxant, she was fine after that, dont know what caused it tho.
