Hi can you help me. I went to view a 4year old chestnut Mare yesterday, she will be 5 in may, she was broken this year and has been schooled well. Still has alot to learn but goes in a lovely outline, however I was a little concerned that she had a slight dip in her back but quite a high bottom if you know what I mean. Is this because she still needs to grow ? xx:rolleyes:

D's are renowned for being late to mature. Usually it would take until 7 to mature fully so this might be the reason.

I am no breed expert but have a lot of Welsh ponies as saddle fitting clients - many of them do tend to be croup high even when fully developed, especially if they never grow a real wither, and they also need a much flatter saddle than you'd suspect as they lift their backs in work.

I cant post my pic it wont allow me. BUT thankyou so much for the posts it is much appreciated. Im learning so much on these gorgeous ponies. Im going back to try her again next weekend then hopefully we can start learning together xx

what i would be careful of is that horse that are conformationally bum high instead of just being bum high through growing can tend to be naturally downhill and can have a tendancy to lean on your hands

I do love a nice welch D hehehehe

However me and friend reckon her very heavy boned section D took a good 7.5 years to fill out and reach her adult height, growing up for a welsh sec D is optional as my 18yr old will tell you ;)

I always think of croup high as different to downhill - croup high affects saddle fitting and is very common in witherless horses as usually of course the wither takes up some of the height in front of horses who are more level. Downhill is more about the relationship of elbow to stifle so is about their moving dynamics.

suppose its how you interprete (SP) it

I always think as downhill as a horse looking like its trying to plough you into the floor lol
