I am 23 and having been dreaming of a horse since I first started riding at 4 years old. Now my chance is upon me as it were. I have the capability and have been offered by the owner to buy my first horse. However I am so scared. i am worried that I wouldn't be able to do the best for her, I am worried that I couldn't get that job I need to keep on affording her in a few years time. I am also worried in a silly way that I am not good enough.
I am posting back here as although haven't done so in a while I remember how wonderful you guys are and how honest and thoughtful. It's the only place I could think of in my current situation that I could get it straight as it were.

I guess what I am asking is what do you think of her. This is Mighty and she is a 7yo mare that has been offered to me. She has all papers and has won at local competitions very well and who I also fell completely and utterly in love with. Sorry not good pics as off my phone. Also it was a very wet day and she has sand on her nose and shoulder d'oh.

I guess I am also asking if anyone has ever regretted buying a horse as of the people I know no one has. hmmmm am also being a bit silly OK a lot silly but this is big to me, very big.

She is absolutely beautiful!

I dont want to appear patronising here but it sounds to me as though you are taking the responsibility of horse ownership very seriously. If more people thought like you, maybe there would be more mentally stable horses in the world!

Its perfectly normal to worry and question your ability if you havnt owned before. Will you be keeping her on a livery yard? If so you will (hopefully) find lots of years of combined experience to help you. As far as the future goes, none of us know what will happen a few years down the road financially, so you must just enjoy every moment with her and try to make provision for the future in case your circumstances change.

Dont forget, we at HHO are all here to support you too

Well, financially, horses always end up costing more than you think, BUT, most people, including me, will do anything to keep paying out for them, including getting a string of part time jobs on top of your main employment.

I notice you are in France....can you get Mighty vetted? And insured? Do you have people around who you can ask for practical advice if you need it? If yes to all of the above I would say go for it, you sound as though you've made up your mind already! She's very pretty by the way. How big is she?

shes sweet. owning a horse can always be a bit unpredictable but in my view i take each day as it comes. as the others said its always good to have people you can grab advice from and dont forget horses dont judge you. they want to have fun.

my mum said to me that i can get a horse after my loan pony and i was all up for the idea....just looking and working things out at the moment... e.g. my ability(i say that im not that experienced .. but people i know say that i am experienced) and also the cost of things... in the process of telling the parents my yearly cost ... eeeeeekk... she is sooo sweet .. so yeah .. i'd go for it if i was you...

. She is currently boarded at the Riding Club and is used in lessons and competitions. As long as I am happy for her to do this she can stay and will be looked after by them at least partially. She can also come home and be kept next door almost with the villages commune as it were of horses including my sisters gelding also bought from the riding club.

Gala, yes I m in france

, it is possible to get her insured and vetted. She was bred by the owner of the riding club and he has already had his vet/friend look at her several times. She is somewhere between 15hh and 15.1hh, which is the perfect size as I am somewhere between 5ft and 5ft 1 lol

ThaéanAlice, lol, indeed. Having someone who is pleased to see you and totally non judgemental would be wonderful, that is one of the things I already love about her, and also my dog.

.

I had a long chat with her owner just after posting this. He is a wonderful person and we have come to the agreement that I am having her however I also have until next Tuesday to back out as he has someone else coming on Thursday that would have her. The though of her going to someone else really stings, it must be love lol. I will still consider it properly etc but .... nah who am I kidding. She's my baby now

I think the main thing here is that you are obviously not afraid to ask questions or for advice. Thats such a good thing as so many people think they are above receiving advice (we have a couple like that at my yard)!

You also sound as if you have the support of knowledgable people to help you out so I'd say go for it. She's a lovely looking horse, and I love her name!

I wish you all the luck for the future and please keep us updated as to how you get on with her xx

Go for it - that mare is beautiful, you have obviously already fallen for her and seem very practical in weighing up whether you can afford a horse or not. To be honest I think you sound like you will make a perfect owner and that horse will be very lucky to be in your care - it also sounds like you have the help and experience of your Riding club and your sister...so don't be afraid to keep asking questions if you are unsure of anything cos it sounds like you have the right people there to back you up. And you can always post on here aswell cos the people here are fab at answering niggly type questions - which do crop up when you own a horse and want the best for them.

Enjoy! x

Lovely looking horse with a soft and beautiful "eye".

I think you will be okay with horse ownership - you aren't afraid to ask for help presumably? I would think there will be plenty of people to give you a helping hand if you need it. Just take things slowly and do everything at your own pace.

Best of luck.
