I advertised my horse a few weeks ago for £3000ish - She is a perfect alrounder, thrives of work and needs to be out there doing things but it perfect in always. I knew this was a little over priced for her as she is 13yo and a full TB but i did put o.n.o and was willing to take less if the right people came along.

I had some interest but nothing really serious.

So after speaking to lots of people about the price and what TBs will sell for I decided to drop her price to £1500 o.n.o. I have had a few phone calls today about her but all of them want her just for hacking or for a gentle plod, shes is perfectly fine hacking but she is happiest when shes out and about, doing thing, going to shows, PC, anything to exersice her mind, which is what i said to them on the phone.

I just feel really annoyed and upset as i want her to go to a home where shes going to be out and about doing things as this is what she really thrives off. Its funny how becaues the horse is cheap people think that its only good enough for hacking. Either way, the price only reflects her age and breed, that is all. I just want her to go to a home where she can have fun and learn and go out to shows and PC or RC :(

Why on earth are you worried wether she is out competing or not? I can guarantee horses are at their happiest when out with a herd, grazing and having an easy life!

The odd hack out and well looked after perfect!.

Shes on Herefordequestrian website, did have her on loads of otheres but add ran out and i didnt want to waste money when i wasn't having any interest.

The issue is that if she is not in regular work (for her mind aswell) she will get silly in the field and then usually gets injured. She is at her best being ridden 2-5 time a week, She will happily have a holiday for 2 weeks and is fine to be bought back in to work after a while off but if she is just left in the field and only hacked out she will go looking for things to entertain her - the devil makes work for idle hooves.

Just be prepared to wait for the right home, maybe? I refused to sell my mare to one buyer, she was cheapish because she had failed flexion tests 18 months beforehand and I agree, a lower price can encourage the wrong home.

The lady in question was quite novicey and I knew my mare was too much horse for her. She was annoyed but I knew it would end in tears. My mare then went on to find a perfect home and is still competing happily with no lameness, to my knowledge!

You have my synmpathy, a friend is trying to sell a similar gelding, with numerous wins at showing, jumping and dressage at local level, also done PC, she's asking £2500 including tack and rugs and has had no interest. I really don't think older TB's sell...

How about a loan, or a loan with view to buy, if your advesterising locally then im sure someone will pick her up. Im in hereford and know afew people looking for a type like yours the only prob is funds up front, so a lwvb will attact them and they would only want it over 3months or so.

I'm not sure I would completely rule out the 'happy hackers'. You say she is 'at her best being ridden 2-5 times a week'. Now the lovely weather is here I hack out every day with my girl, we do over 30 miles a week, in all 3 paces and think she is probably fitter than some of the 'competion' horses on the yard (it's rather hilly where we are).

So, what I am trying to say is that 'only hacked out' might actually be more work than she gets in 2-5 schooling sessions - just an idea for you to think about.

Hope you find the right home for her, my girl is 18 and is certainly not ready to be a field ornament - so I do understand where you are coming from.

Thanks people.

I had thought about loaning her but again havnt had any interest in that when we advertised her. Im very happy for people to have her on trail to make sure both parties are happy but we dont own our own land and having horses return from trial/loan at short notice dos cause some problems with finding a field to rent round here.

Lesson learnt - TBs dont sell well lol.

im surprised you havnt had much interst in loaning her, have you put on hfd equestrain as a loan?

How big is she? I will be looking in September (got to sell current horse) but Im after a 16.2 plus and specifically want a TB.

Happy hacker tens to suggest very light work - I can't think of another expression that would cover the hackers who go out frequently and for a long time!

Having same problems selling my 14.2 HH got him advertised everywhere, not been tempted to drop as people that regularly look may think there's something wrong with him.
Stick to your guns with a price that's reasonable, advertise trial available and good home more important.
some one somewhere will be interested. Good luck I'm keeping all fingers crossed and going to sit it out. Doesn'T help when people are selling at real low silly prices though

Have you contacted your local PC district commissioner and RC about her (think there's also a PC website)? She sounds ideal for a teen that wants a nice horse to compete but not a a stupid price. I had a gorgeous 14 year old TB mare when I was 13 - we won the PC HT cup, ODE cup etc - she was fab :)

Honestly the horse will be fine and will not miss competing in the least as long as the Happy Hacker is not just a one day a week person.

I bought my old horse when he was competing most weekends at Medium Level, at the time I was not that interested in competing (or schooling to be honest) and I just literally hacked him out daily and he thrived on it and because he was getting the chance to actually get out and have a blast now an again he completly chilled out.

Good news was 18 months later when I decided ok fancy a bit of competing now he just clicked back into it but remained chilled.

As long as the new owner will give her the work she needs she will be fine

I used to just hack and my horse went for long rides more or less every day and was fit and well and interested in life.
Surely most people that hack go out every day?

I specifically went for a TB that hadnt competed because they were cheap and it was all I could afford.

I think, as you're selling your horse, you should relax and accept that you will no longer be able to control what he does in the future. There are brilliant hacking homes and horrible competetive homes. I think you should have a re-think and concentrate on trying to find someone who appears to be a person who will love your horse and treat him well, rather than worrying about what he will do for a living.

I understand what you mean OP, but I ditto Tinypony (well put I think :)).

My version of hacking, where and when there is the right conditions and location, is long and varied, with jumps where possible and usually containing at least one good canter :D.

As othes have said, someone might 'just want a happy hacker' because they haven't clicked with a horse and felt the confidence to go competing. Your lad might change their mind. Equally a competative home may bring more stress and strains. At thirteen he obviously isn't in his dotage, but a hacking home is more likely (and yes, I am generalising here) to be a long term home, probably for life.

Have a hug and a hot choccy whilst you're musing on it :)

I have been looking for a loan for ages now and nothing has come up i want a good allrounder!

We have been looking to loan our retired mare for hacking and have had the otherside when they want to compete her and i have put hacking only!!

Good luck.

I can see what everyone is saying about hacking but the people who called said that they only ride at wekends.

The problem is that i dont really want to sell her so i guess im just being fussy =[ I havnt had much interest in her so when i have had interest and it hasnt been what iv wanted for her iv been a bit upset, shes just wasted with me now as i cant ride atm due to a neck injury.

I remember seeing the ad when she was at £3000, at £1500 she is a steal. I would be ringing you up right now however I need something bigger :(

I do agree about hacking etc. I can only hack as I do not have a school, however I work my horses 5-6 times a week, school whilst out on hacks and jump in the field/hack to schools once in a blue moon. My horses are generally a lot fitter and happier than most of my friends competition horses. I may not compete much but I do go down to the beach/fun rides/hunting etc so my horses are not bored.

Can you advertise elsewhere? I have been looking on lots of websites for what seems like forever and it was only a few weeks ago I found out that Herefordshire Equestrian ever existed!

I have some serious happy hackers on my yard and they have the fittest horses! They ride 5 - 6 days a week, often for 2 hours or more. They take their trailers out to different locations so they can go on more interesting, longer rides.
It's not my cup of tea as I prefer to do a bit of everything but they spend more time in the saddle than me. I wouldn't dismiss a 'happy hacker' home as the horses I know are happy, active and have more varied lives than the many horses who are schooled for 30 mins a day and are taken to the odd competition.
