Went over to Hickstead today for unaffiliated dressage, I entered at the very last minute for P12 and N30, I haven't been out to dressage since March, so was completely unprepared. Been focusing very much on the jumping lately, but got a couple of flatwork lessons in with the lady who rides G for me, and she's changed my riding a huge amount with just a couple of small tweaks.

Warmed up nicely, except G felt completely flat. I'd brought him in from the field early and plaited him up first thing, so he knew he was going out and didn't have his usual morning doze when I left him. Met a very nice lady who lent me her stick, and in for P14 I went. The judge rang the bell almost immediately and off I went, chucking the stick out of the school as G suddenly woke up. He did a lovely test until we got to our nemesis: right rein canter. I know we struggle getting this, and I'd really worked on it in the warm up, but alas it didn't happen, and G is so balanced that I didn't realise until we'd ridden a whole long side :eek3: Changed onto the correct lead but it was all a bit messy and disorganised.

Came out grinning though as apart from that one mistake, it had been a lovely test. I'd really worked on our connection and engagement and he'd been light in my hand and submissive for a lot of the test which is a huge improvement.

Didn't have long until the Novice, so I practised a walk to canter and pushed for some medium strides, but it was so hot I didn't want to do too much. Stupidly instead of keeping him going slowly in walk, I stood and watched the lady before me (the one who lent me her stick), then went straight in. Well G was completely switched off, and again the judge didn't give us any time before ringing the bell, so the whole test wasn't pretty at all. We got the wrong leg twice, we spooked, we tripped. Even our halts and free walk (which are usually our trump cards) were a bit rubbish!

Back to the lorry, and I made a cup of tea for the whip-lending-lady who was parked a couple of lorries down, while she checked the scores. My prelim was 59.38 which I was a little disappointed in, until I got the sheet. I'd got a 1 for my wrong right rein canter followed by a 4 for the next part of the canter when I'd corrected, but nearly all the other marks were 6's and 6.5's except our FWLR which was a 7. Had I not had that mistake and got flustered I'd have been about 62% which would have made me happy. And also would have made me not last!

The novice was a total washout, and I got 53.85%. Possibly slightly harsh but I didn't deserve much more than that. On looking at the photos, he's gurning away in all of them and all the tips I'd been picking up had gone completely by the wayside and my riding was atrocious.

So I was last in both tests. Again. However as last time I went to Hickstead I did fall off in the middle of the dressage test, staying on was a bonus! Got some lovely pictures too :)

1) well done for going out and about, i always admire anyone who can.
2) for not riding a test and being unprepared, you didn't do too badly. You didn't fall off :p
3) the bottom photos actually quite lovely it shows a relaxed horse to me.

One last thing though, is he really happy in that bit? He looks a bit braced against it, or maybe the material was dry.

Thanks, i love that photo too! He's always braced against the bit, this one is the one he's been most relaxed in! I'd actually quite like to try him bitless but seeing as how you can't compete without a bit, it seems a little pointless.

Ooof that sounds like harsh scoring to me! We managed a 5 (slightly undeserved I said zero to my mum ;)) for our wrong leg , but the rest of the scores sound better!

Excellent progress too for not being deposited! Plus lots to take away like not letting him switch off before you go in, were there any themes in the comments to take away and work on? We always get balance and suppleness underlined, which when the beast is trying to spook is the least of my worries :o.

For such a long break since you were last out I think you've done well, more prep for the next one and I'm sure the scores will pick up!

Ah thats really annoying rule isn't it. It does need to change.

Agree sounds like plenty to be proud of and some tips for next time. I wonder if nerves played a large part too. I forget all my training and get brain freeze when I compete, as I don't do it enough !

Bob the nota cob and I have been slung out halfway through a test on "safety "grounds. OK he did chase the photographer up onto a fence , and the threatened "pitch invasion" of the adjacent ring was just high spirits. WE are the Zero against which all horses measure their progress. I feel like pinning the last photo up in his stable and using sarcasm and possibly even irony on him!I dream of him looking like that in a test . well done!

A great report JB and no flying dismount - you have plenty to be proud of well done. Xx

Thank you Sprout :)

Thanks Alex, I thought it was rather harsh too! Yes, our comments were (as always) tension, tension in mouth, and hollow (as a result of being tense). He did spend half the test screaming for other horses, I've learnt that he's better if we travel alone but there's only so much I can do about his stress especially when I'm nervous myself!

I must admit I don't really see the point in it but while it's there it needs to be abided by.

I've got my nerves almost under control however I did get my knickers in a twist in the novice, and that is definitely the pressure of competing.

Wow thanks that's a lovely thing to say! Bob sounds like a real character :D

JB, quite frankly those photos of G show a vastly different horse to the ones way back in the year, better to be laid back than napping, spooking or dumping!
I would consider this a big improvement, despite the canter lead in test 1 and the faux pas of test 2.

Onwards Padawan, after all, you only had a couple of sessions to practice - next time more prep and you should be able to crack on with more consistency :)

Well at least you got out and did it. The photo's look great much better than the score you got. So more prep work and next time you will rock.

Well done you :) Every time I do a test everything I've learnt and practiced goes out the window too - it's so annoying isn't it!

1 sounds really harsh - you did canter after all!
Well done going from falling off mid test to being a bit too quiet sounds like a huge improvement to me

I'm fine until something goes wrong when I just get totally flustered.

Thanks, he's that annoying blend of quiet but sharp IYKWIM. So he'll be plodding along and then suddenly whip round with little or no warning! Can be very frustrating at times.

Yay for not falling off and navigating round both tests :).

I agree with everyone else that 1 for the wrong leg is very harsh. I notice you've got G in a Micklem - have you got any plans to try the Stubben Freedom bridle? It's ugly as sin but the reviews are really positive for it.

No I've not heard of the Stubben Freedom. I really like the Micklem, he's much more settled in the contact than in the drop. Will look it up.
