After being slightly concerned Bud had puss from one nostril last night and getting a vet out from the big practice when I was convinced pony was going to die, I now feel incredibly stupid. Emergency phone call to vets, to be told by said vet (not my own) that he hasn't got a temperature, his respiration rate is normal and not laboured and his heart rate is normal. Bud was doing his camel impression everytime someone came out the feedroom as the food was obviously for him... He was munching hay and drinking normally still. I've been told that the little lump I could see up his right nostril is in fact a bit of hay... Pony is fighting hay up his nostril. Advice - keep cleaning it and it will come out in the mucus, that's why he's producing it. Sample has been taken for analysis just incase and bloods taken where I was panicking. So any ideas how to get the hay out quicker? I've had Bud 8 years and never had a problem with him before, and after owning horses 19 years I would have thought I wouldn't have panicked as much. But I did... And now I don't like the foul smelling pus as I know its from hay. So could someone please explain to my dizzy 13 year old gelding that hay is for eating, not shoving up his nose.
So not really sure how to stop him doing it again...
