Hannah was really restless last night, pawing the ground, getting up and down and at 5am this morning she started sweating a little and setting the foaling alarm off. I kept my eye on her, telephoned the vets and just stayed with her for a bit. When I finally went in, I looked under her tail and there was loads of sticky stuff which was the cervical plug.
The head vet came up at 10am and had a look and a feel and said he believed she was ready, but perhaps had stopped because the yard had become busy. He then casually said, "So, if you just take out the droppings I'll induce her."
I asked him whether everything was ok, and he said everything felt fine but he wanted to be there when it was born because its legs were still tucked up even though it was on its way. So, she was induced and the waiting began.
She sweated up very quickly, but just was not pushing at all... The vet came back after 15 minutes, and said he was going to give her some more to get her going. As he walked to his car to get the injection, Hannah got down, started pushing and out popped the bag!
It all went really quickly after that... and Troy was born at 10.30am. Hannah started whickering at him straight away, and he back at her. When she got up, the vet checked Troy over and all was well, checked Hannah and she was fine too. He gave Troy a shot of antibiotics and then tied up the placenta for me. Just as he was about to leave it all fell out so he could check it while he was there
(I didn't have to touch it!)
He is absolutely HUGE and has the longest legs I have ever seen. He took about an hour and a half to stand up properly, and then another 30 minutes to feed because he just didn't get it. I had to help him in the end, but he seemed to pick it up once he had been shown once or twice.
I have just left them for a few hours having seen him feed 5-6 times and they were both snoozing happily after a very busy day
Hannah is so far turning out to be a very good mum... She was a bit stressed out with me being in there at first but after a bribe with some apples and a bran mash she soon realised that I was still her Mum and is completely fine with me being in there, even between her and foalie as Troy kept running around me.
Anyway, here are some photos of him just after being born, taking his first feed and just before I left:
