Casually going through a Facebook group where horses are put up for sale and I seen an advert that has really taken the biscuit for being so unexpected in what we would expect in a Thoroughbred.

The advert is -
16.2 ex-racer (has raced before but didn't make the grade)
4 years old.
Novice ride.
110% Bombproof.
Described as ideal for a first horse.

Maybe the person could be exaggerating or this could be a sensible horse that a novice could take on. A 4 year old ex-racer as a first horse..:rolleyes:


Title was meant to be "Well I never expected to see this in a horse advert" gah I shouldn't rush typing.

I learnt to ride on two ex racers and they were like beach donkeys. There's one at my yard now and you practically have to drag it everywhere, and it's a million times more bombproof than my girl!

I have an ex-racer who is a donkey but a 4 year old novice ride?!:eek:
Not making any bad comments to anyone who owns young ex-racers who are sensible it just came as such a shock especially when its so young and will probably be needing more work doing in the future/is still green.

oh.... I saw a very similar ad the other day. If its who I think it is selling it, they sold one to someone I know and to be fair it was as described.

However getting a TB to 110% bombproof for a novice, seems a little unlikely. Unless means 1st horse for a competent novice maybe?
 
See, it depends what you mean by 'novice' really. A novice to me is someone who isn't maybe very experienced - ie has not been doing something for a long time and is still learning. However, this is not a BAD thing and a confident novice would not be a concern in my mind and there's no reason why a 4yo horse wouldn't be any less suitable than an older one who has maybe picked up bad habits.

A nervous novice however would maybe not be a good match BUT I am not necessarily sure someone who's nervous of riding should really be look to buy a horse anyway. Nervousness on any horse is not a brilliant mix!

My horse as 4 yo would have suited any rider really and i would have happily put non-horsey friends on him.
 
my ex racer is a novice ride, nothing phases him and he's a bit of a plod.. but he's 13! I highly doubt a 4yo is a novice ride.. surely it needs to be reschooled and it must still be green?
 
I have a 5yo ex racer at the moment, I'm still what I'd call a novice. But one with enough experience and wits about me to notice dangers..

Novice maybe yes..
First horse? No chance in hell :D
